With seven months to go until the great-grandmother turns 100, she still wakes up at 5am and trains every morning \u2013 and she puts her health down to staying active. \u2018I\u2019ve exercised my whole life,\u2019 she tells Women\u2019s Health UK. \u2018As a little girl, I was always playing catch, basketball or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a707810\/how-to-start-running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a707810\/how-to-start-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running\" data-node-id=\"3.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running<\/a> around. In my adult years, I played golf, volleyball and tennis for over 30 years. Activity has always been a part of who I am.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Exercise has been a constant, but what that looks like has evolved over time. While sport defined her early adulthood, she switched to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706202\/strength-training-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706202\/strength-training-for-beginners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength training<\/a> at 95 with the guidance of a physical therapist and fitness trainer. She doesn&#8217;t track any health metrics, but she says she doesn&#8217;t need to: \u2018My doctor told me to &#8220;Keep doing whatever you\u2019re doing.&#8221; That\u2019s enough motivation for me.\u2019 Below, Goldman shares how she stays active at 99, and her advice for getting started.  <\/p>\n<p>1. I rely on convenience and support from professionals to get started<img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"senior exercises\" title=\"senior exercises\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8bf982aa-af9a-43bc-8d8f-1e0c397d3001.jpeg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Encore Luxury Living<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I began going to the gym as soon as I moved into <a href=\"https:\/\/encoreluxuryliving.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/encoreluxuryliving.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Encore Luxury Living\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Encore Luxury Living<\/a> in New York in July 2022. I\u2019m not someone who can sit still, so having a beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"gym\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gym<\/a> right downstairs made it easy. I\u2019ve always believed in keeping busy and staying active, and the convenience and support here inspired me to jump right in.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Training here was my first time doing more structured gym workouts. I learned by taking my time on each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a30774746\/gym-machines\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a30774746\/gym-machines\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"machine\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">machine<\/a>, focusing on proper form, and listening to my body. I also work with our physical therapist and fitness trainer, who help with balance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a60368308\/posture-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a60368308\/posture-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"posture\" data-node-id=\"19.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posture<\/a> and recovery, so I always feel supported.<\/p>\n<p>2. I warm up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a71136357\/low-impact-cardio-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a71136357\/low-impact-cardio-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cardio\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cardio<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I work out five to six days a week at Encore Luxury Living in the early morning around 9am, dedicating about an hour to each session. I begin with cardio, usually 20 minutes on the bike to warm up and get my heart rate moving. After that, I do light strength training with three-to-four-pound weights, focusing on my arms.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I like to focus on strengthening my arms because upper-body strength is essential for maintaining independence at my age. Strong arms help me safely push myself up out of a chair, steady myself while walking, and handle everyday tasks with more confidence. I&#8217;ve found that keeping my arms strong directly improves my mobility and overall sense of security. To train them, I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"resistance\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">resistance<\/a> equipment, including bands and various machines, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a708496\/mobility\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a708496\/mobility\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mobility\" data-node-id=\"29.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mobility<\/a> and muscle strength.<\/p>\n<p>3. Besides strength, I prioritise posture and balance for longevity<img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"senior exercises\" title=\"senior exercises\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0d7a6844-5561-4345-a103-369037b1c818.jpeg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Encore Luxury Living<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I strength train to build muscle to protect my joints and bones, but I also work with a physical therapist twice a week on posture and balance. These sessions usually include gentle core-strengthening movements, posture alignment work to keep my shoulders, back and spine tall, and controlled stepping exercises. I also practice light balance drills, such as standing on one foot with support. All of these exercises help me stay stable, upright, and confident in my daily movements. <br data-node-id=\"36.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I\u2019m proud that my posture has always been good. In fact, my teacher used to have me walk around the classroom because my back was so straight, but staying active helps me maintain it. I don\u2019t need chairs with arms; I sit straight up. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"44\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Beyond that, I meet with our certified fitness trainer twice weekly for post-workout recovery like massage and a massage gun treatment \u2013 these help me to prevent injury.<\/p>\n<p>4. I tailor my nutrition to longevity<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"49\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I\u2019ve always believed a sensible, balanced diet (not cutting anything out but focusing on healthy foods) is important for longevity. I avoid over-processed food and focus on getting all my micronutrients (the vitamins) and macronutrients (protein, carbs and fat). Overall, I watch what I eat, but I do sometimes have the odd treat \u2013 I just try not to overdo it.<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"50\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"50.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"50.0.0\">Pre-workout snack: <\/strong>Banana and a cup of tea.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"50.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"50.1.0\">Breakfast: <\/strong>After my workout, I eat eggs for protein, along with fruit.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"50.2\"><strong data-node-id=\"50.2.0\">Lunch: <\/strong>Vegetables, a salad, or soup.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"50.3\"><strong data-node-id=\"50.3.0\">Dinner: <\/strong>A balanced meal with carbs, vegetables and lean protein. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"50.4\"><strong data-node-id=\"50.4.0\">Snacks: <\/strong>Fruit or something simple and healthy. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5. I train with the goal of reaching 100 <img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"senior exercises\" title=\"senior exercises\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d818f144-0d24-4d18-84f6-bf9d59243f5d.jpeg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Encore Luxury Living<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"56\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">My main goal right now is to reach 100 feeling good (I\u2019m turning 100 in November). I\u2019m a grandmother and great-grandmother to 11 wonderful great-grandchildren. They visit me at Encore on weekends and staying strong and active means I can keep up with them. I used to play sports with my grandchildren years ago; now I cheer on my great-grandchildren at their games.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"60\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Regular training means I move with confidence, physically and mentally. I get up early, go to the gym, and stay busy. Many people my age slow down because they\u2019re afraid of movement, but staying active keeps me independent and energetic. It makes me feel like a new person every day. I feel proud of myself. I feel accomplished after every workout. I feel alive.<\/p>\n<p>6. I keep my routine simple and consistent<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"65\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">I don\u2019t overcomplicate how I train. I stick to the below routine and mix up strength exercises according to how I feel on the day or depending on whether I\u2019m training with my fitness trainer. I look forward to it every day.<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"66\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"66.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.0.0\">Monday:<\/strong> Cardio and strength<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"66.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.1.0\">Tuesday:<\/strong> Cardio, strength, plus physical therapy<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"66.2\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.2.0\">Wednesday:<\/strong> Cardio and strength<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"66.3\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.3.0\">Thursday:<\/strong> Cardio, strength, plus physical therapy<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"66.4\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.4.0\">Friday:<\/strong> Cardio and strength<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"66.5\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.5.0\">Saturday:<\/strong> Light workout or movement <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"66.6\"><strong data-node-id=\"66.6.0\">Sunday:<\/strong> Rest or gentle movement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7. I want other women to experience the benefits of exercise<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"71\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">My advice for older women wanting to exercise but who feel afraid to get started is simple: keep active, whatever way you can (that doesn\u2019t need to be structured gym workouts, it can be sports or keeping active throughout the day with housework or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a63069379\/health-benefits-of-walking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a63069379\/health-benefits-of-walking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walking\" data-node-id=\"71.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walking<\/a>).
