We&#8217;ve had very good talks over the last 24 hours and it&#8217;s very possible that we&#8217;ll make a deal,&#8221; Mr Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p>He said later that &#8220;it&#8217;ll be over quickly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump has repeatedly played up the prospect of an agreement to end the war that started on 28 February, so far without success.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides remain at odds over a variety of difficult issues, such as Iran&#8217;s nuclear ambitions and its control of the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war handled one-fifth of the world&#8217;s oil and gas supply.<\/p>\n<p>A \u200cPakistani source and another source briefed on the mediation said \u2060an agreement was close on a one-page memorandum that would formally end the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>That would kick off discussions to unblock shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, lift US sanctions on Iran and set curbs on Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Iranians drive past a huge billboard carrying the image of the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/002453a9-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nIran&#8217;s parliament speaker said reports a deal is close amount to US spin<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf appeared to mock reports that indicated the two sides were close, writing on social media in English that &#8220;Operation Trust Me Bro failed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Qalibaf said such reports amounted to US spin following its failure to open the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Reports of a possible agreement caused global oil prices to tumble to \u200ctwo-week lows yesterday, with benchmark Brent crude futures falling about 11% to around $98 a barrel at one point before rising back above the $100 mark.<\/p>\n<p>Global share prices also leapt and bond yields fell on optimism about an end to a war that has disrupted \u2060energy supplies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The contents of the US-Iran peace proposals are thin, but there is an expectation in the market that further military action will not take place,&#8221; said Takamasa Ikeda, a \u200csenior portfolio manager at GCI Asset Management.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s embassy denied its armed forces had been involved in an explosion that struck a South Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz this week.<\/p>\n<p>The blast and fire occurred on the Panama-flagged HMM Namu, a cargo ship carrying 24 crew members, on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump later claimed that Iran had &#8220;taken some shots&#8221;
