{"id":473172,"date":"2026-05-07T15:10:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T15:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/473172\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T15:10:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T15:10:19","slug":"unemployment-edges-down-to-4-8-despite-economic-uncertainty-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/473172\/","title":{"rendered":"Unemployment edges down to 4.8% despite economic uncertainty \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State\u2019s unemployment rate edged down to 4.8 per cent in April despite the economic uncertainty caused by conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This compares with a revised rate of 5 per cent in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\">Central Statistics Office (CSO)<\/a> revisions indicate unemployment reached 5 per cent in January this year and stayed at this rate for both February and March. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CSO said the seasonally adjusted number of people classified as being unemployed was 140,300 in April, compared with 146,200 the previous month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This represented an annual rise of 6,100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite global headwinds related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\">tariffs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-crisis\/\">energy prices<\/a>, the State\u2019s labour market has remained strong with a record 2.83 million employed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776101724_424_1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>PrepayPower are hiking their prices &#8211;
