The neighborhood visited by the cougar is several miles from the closest foothills.<\/p>\n<p>The California Department of Fish and Wildlife also responded to the scene, police said. Officials used staff on the ground and drones in the air to monitor the animal\u2019s location. <\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"A Fish and Wildlife employee holds a paw of the sedated adult mountain lion.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"1307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778178317_563_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>A Fish and Wildlife employee holds a paw of the sedated adult mountain lion. <\/p>\n<p>(California Fish and Wildlife Department)<\/p>\n<p>After wandering near homes and businesses, the big cat reportedly took refuge underneath a pickup truck at an apartment complex, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/mountain-lion-spotted-hiding-under-car-near-homes-escondido\/4019318\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NBC7<\/a> in San Diego reported.<\/p>\n<p>Fish and Wildlife officials tranquilized the animal with a game dart, after which the mountain lion ran east over a fence before the dart started taking effect. It then fell asleep and was captured shortly after 7 p.m. <\/p>\n<p>Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Steve Gonzalez told <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/05\/05\/mountain-lion-fitted-with-tracking-collar-and-relocated-after-escondido-visit\/?utm_email=E441D48D651962BE6468052560&amp;lctg=E441D48D651962BE6468052560&amp;active=no&amp;utm_source=listrak&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_term=https%3a%2f%2fwww.sandiegouniontribune.com%2f2026%2f05%2f05%2fmountain-lion-fitted-with-tracking-collar-and-relocated-after-escondido-visit%2f&amp;utm_campaign=sdut-san_diego_union_tribune-essential_san_diego-nl&amp;utm_content=curated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the San Diego Union-Tribune<\/a> that the mountain lion is a 3-year-old male and was given an ear tag and collar before it was released into the Cleveland National Forest on Tuesday night. Facebook users who responded to the Escondido police online post expressed relief that the mountain lion was not euthanized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo pleased it\u2019s been sedated and removed.
