\n\tWhen it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards<\/a>, what happens on (and off) that stage almost always makes its way into the pop cultural hall of fame.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Sunday, the show<\/a> will make its return to New York\u2019s UBS Arena, with rapper LL Cool J hosting the live broadcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOver the years, the VMAs have delivered some of the most unforgettable moments in entertainment, from Madonna, Britney Spears<\/a> and Christina Aguilera\u2019s infamous three-way kiss to Nicki Minaj calling out Miley Cyrus onstage (Miley, what\u2019s good?).<\/p>\n

\n\tBeyond headline-making drama, the ceremony is also home to one of the industry\u2019s most coveted honors: the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year, Mariah Carey\u2014the best-selling female artist of all time\u2014will receive the award and perform a career-spanning medley of her greatest hits. She joins an elite roster of past honorees including Katy Perry, Shakira, Beyonc\u00e9, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Rihanna (to name a few).<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd of course, no VMAs would be complete without the fashion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of the most memorable looks that still sparks conversation is Katy Perry and Riff Raff\u2019s recreation of Britney Spears<\/a> and Justin Timberlake\u2019s all denim look for the 2001 American Music Awards.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2014, the \u201cFirework\u201d singer walked the VMAs red carpet in a custom Versace number nearly identical to the one Spears wore in 2001. Perry\u2019s date, rapper Riff Raff, also wore a custom denim suit similar to Timberlake\u2019s. \u201cJust when I thought the denim dress had retired \u2026 you bring it back!\u201d Spears tweeted at Perry in 2014. \u201cYou looked amazing tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNicki Minaj <\/a>has had her own share of jaw-dropping style statements. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2011, the \u201cAnaconda\u201d rapper wore a metallic corset, pink tutu and a chain of stuffed animals, topped off with a whimsical face mask (apparently she got the memo about the pandemic way before the rest of the world).\u00a0She kept the buzz going in 2014 when, as host, she opted for a more stripped-back look: a gray skirt with an oversized train, chunky combat boots and a sparkly bralette.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs memorable as Minaj and Perry\u2019s moments were, no one dominates the red carpet (or stage) quite like Lady Gaga.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer 2010 meat dress\u2014designed by Franc Fernandez and aptly titled Matambre\u2014is proof, remaining one of the VMAs\u2019 most unforgettable looks. Even industry icon Cher praised it as \u201castonishing\u201d and a true piece of \u201cmodern art,\u201d though the moment turned even more ironic when Gaga handed the \u201cBelieve\u201d singer (a longtime vegetarian) a matching meat purse during the Video of the Year acceptance speech.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe year before, Gaga<\/a> delivered another headline-making moment in a one-sleeved lace bodysuit designed by Haus of Gaga. During her performance of \u201cPaparazzi,\u201d she shocked audiences by staging an intense bloody finale, cementing the outfit\u2014and the performance\u2014as one of the most iconic in VMA history.<\/p>\n
