Retire earlier than that and you will be penalized; wait until age 70 and enjoy higher benefits of roughly 8% for each year you delay past FRA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6PGY7BNMIVAXZBL6CZY7EEHFTU\">Currently, the average benefit for people age 67 is $2,016 per month, according to an analysis by financial website <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=126006X1587343&amp;xs=1&amp;xcust=leadagore%7C&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fool.com%2Fretirement%2F2026%2F05%2F07%2Fthe-average-social-security-benefit-for-age-67-in%2F&amp;product_category=Software%3EComputer+Software%3EFinancial%2C+Tax+%26+Accounting+Software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/retirement\/2026\/05\/07\/the-average-social-security-benefit-for-age-67-in\/\">MotleyFool.com. <\/a>There\u2019s a disparity between men\u2019s and women\u2019s benefits, however, with the average for men being $2,234 compared to $1,801 for women. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZZWF3XUXBZB43FRDSP7UD2TQHI\">That doesn\u2019t mean people are waiting until FRA to claim benefits, however. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/how-many-people-wait-until-full-retirement-age-for-social-security-and-why-it-matters-11964296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/how-many-people-wait-until-full-retirement-age-for-social-security-and-why-it-matters-11964296\">Investopedia reports<\/a> more than two-thirds of the 3.25 million new claimants in 2024 filed before age 66, a move that results in a permanent cut to benefits. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CCYUFYCOT5B37OT6KVVQWMV4NQ\">Those who claimed benefits at age 67 in 2024 received almost $1,200 more per month than those who claimed at age 63.
