He joked about my lovely accent\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-attenborough\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-attenborough\/\">David Attenborough<\/a> was hailed as a \u201cglobal treasure\u201d by  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-robinson\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-robinson\/\">Mary Robinson<\/a> this week, as the natural history presenter turns 100 today. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former president of Ireland, paying tribute to the man who has worked tirelessly to bring the treasures of the natural world to our attention, told the BBC that Attenborough was trusted by the public in a way that was exceptionally rare. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are very few people in the world who have that global trust as he has and as he deserves to have,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is a kind of global treasure.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From Ireland, which featured in his 2023 series, Wild Isles, he has used the extraordinary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/08\/25\/thousands-of-dolphins-probably-dying-off-irish-coast-every-year-but-no-research-to-find-out-why\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/08\/25\/thousands-of-dolphins-probably-dying-off-irish-coast-every-year-but-no-research-to-find-out-why\/\">underwater footage of marine conservationist and documentary-maker Ken O\u2019Sullivan<\/a> and the prolific production and direction talents of zoologist-turned-film-maker Anne Sommerfield. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dublin-raised wildlife biologist and National Geographic presenter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liz-bonnin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liz-bonnin\/\">Liz Bonnin<\/a> meanwhile has often been mentioned as his natural successor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Sullivan says there will certainly be others who carry on the craft of wildlife film-making, but none will be quite like Attenborough. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat a beautiful man. He has that wise, kind, grandfatherly aura about him that you completely trust,\u201d he says, echoing Mary Robinson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s nothing fake. His passion is so natural, his presentation is so natural. He always wrote his own scripts and in later years, he\u2019d take what was written and make it his own. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd I know from people who worked closely with him that he\u2019d nearly always deliver his pieces to camera in one take.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were times when he absolutely had to. Photograph: Gareth Cattermole\/Getty <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The excitement is palpable as Attenborough declares he can see its tail just below the vessel and his timing is impeccable as he turns to the camera, points to the waters by his side and exclaims with delight: \u201cThere, the blue whale\u201d just as the gigantic creature emerges. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He then seamlessly delivers lines conveying the enormity of an animal, the largest that exists or ever existed, and how only the vast ocean could support its extraordinary size. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Had he held his breath and froze spellbound like most of his viewers, the incredibly rare opportunity would have passed and the precious scene would never have materialised. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2026\/04\/17\/a-gorilla-story-on-netflix-david-attenborough-at-his-most-chill-pill-sounding-back-where-it-all-began\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A Gorilla Story on Netflix: David Attenborough at his most chill pill-sounding back where it all beganOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ken O\u2019Sullivan was thrilled to find his own whale footage, shot off the Irish coast for his series, North Atlantic, which was distributed by the BBC, had been included in a feature film of underwater clips compiled for and narrated by Attenborough. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was so proud. Something he said later on in life was that he was sorry he hadn\u2019t spent more time filming closer to home. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Marine conservationist and documentary-maker Ken O&#x2019;Sullivan\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/EMKU5K4WAFGT5FYVYEDMZSKK3U.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Marine conservationist and documentary-maker Ken O\u2019Sullivan <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe were all so excited by exotic species that maybe the wildlife in Britain and Ireland got a bit overlooked. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe made up for it with some fabulous films and I was just so pleased to have my work included. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just for my own sake, but because I want Ireland to be seen \u2013 and when David Attenborough is presenting your work, it\u2019ll be seen.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Anne Sommerfield had the \u201cweird but wonderful\u201d experience of showing rough cuts of the 2015 series, Great Barrier Reef, to Attenborough with her own voice recorded reading the script.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is the voice I grew up listening to and here he was listening to me,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd he was so kind and charming about it. He joked about my lovely accent and said we just let Anne do the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2026\/05\/06\/david-attenborough-wrote-me-an-annoying-child-in-1980s-cork-a-letter-to-explain-his-mistake\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Attenborough wrote me, an annoying child in 1980s Cork, a letter to explain his mistakeOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time, there was much speculation that this would be Attenborough\u2019s last programme and Sommerfield has huge admiration for how he handled the non-stop questions at press screenings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEveryone was trying to get the scoop \u2013 that\u2019s it, David\u2019s done. And he would always manage to gently bring the conversation back to the focus of the film \u2013 the Great Barrier Reef is in trouble, climate change is a serious issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe would be asked outright \u2013 who will replace you? And he never showed annoyance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPersonally, I don\u2019t think there is a single person on the planet you can step into his shoes. He is one of a kind \u2013 such an important figure for the natural world and a really unifying voice that everyone can feel safe with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Co Offaly-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/2022\/11\/07\/the-marvellous-otherworldly-wonders-hidden-in-irelands-bogs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/2022\/11\/07\/the-marvellous-otherworldly-wonders-hidden-in-irelands-bogs\/\">nature photographer Tina Claffey<\/a>  is renowned for her exquisite images of Ireland\u2019s ethereal wetlands, but she has two small, plain items framed on her wall that she cherishes more than almost anything. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They are simple handwritten notes from Attenborough thanking her for sending him copies of her books. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"David Attenborough during filming for the 1979 Life on Earth series. Photograph: BBC Studios <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the first, he tells her is \u201clooking forward eagerly to sitting at leisure and taking in its words and images\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the second, he assures her he will enjoy the publication greatly, just as he did its predecessor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Claffey still can\u2019t quite believe they\u2019re real or that he went to the effort of writing them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI sent the books entirely without expectation. Just the thought of him maybe holding them in his hand was enough for me,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe amount of stuff he must get sent to him from all over the world, and he took the time to write a personal thank-you. Twice. It\u2019s made my life.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If there\u2019s a reverence in how Claffey speaks of Attenborough, it is echoed in a vast church of admirers who worship the broadcaster, author and, latterly, activist, who has been bringing the world\u2019s natural marvels into wonder-starved sitting-rooms since the 1950s. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Co Offaly-based nature photographer Tina Claffey\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Z2ULRGUEK5A4JHPK2MPZXEXMAQ.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1166\"\/>Co Offaly-based nature photographer Tina Claffey <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He now generates wonder himself. His 100th birthday falls today, May 8th, but he is still working, still caring, still captivating. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ella-mcsweeney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ella-mcsweeney\/\">Ella McSweeney<\/a> got to shake hands with him. \u201cI might have held his hand a little bit too long,\u201d the broadcaster and Irish Times columnist says of their meeting at the Wildscreen festival of wildlife filmmaking in Bristol in the early 2000s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another of her heroes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/people\/film-maker-musician-and-conservationist-1.1253967\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/people\/film-maker-musician-and-conservationist-1.1253967\">\u00c9amon de Buitl\u00e9ar<\/a>, made the introduction, and McSweeney found herself in conversation with a man of immense presence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe is incredibly charismatic and so modest,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe was very sincere, intentional with his words, and interested. He didn\u2019t talk about himself&#8230; he was interested in me, asking me about things. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat I love first and foremost about him is that he just so interested in everything outside of himself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd his commitment to public service programming. And his scripts. They are so well-crafted, and he carries the message in them astonishingly well.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Anything else? \u201cHe\u2019s also extremely good-looking. The 19-year-old environmentalist from Sandycove, who became known for her beach-cleaning charity aged just nine, is now in her first year studying marine biology in Portsmouth University. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2023\/03\/04\/new-david-attenborough-series-about-britain-and-ireland-likely-to-be-his-last-on-location\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New David Attenborough series about Britain and Ireland likely to be his last on locationOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI know it\u2019s not the first thing I should mention, but I was watching old footage of him when he started out and I just thought he was really attractive, absolutely gorgeous,\u201d he says of watching the shirtless adventurer on the high seas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Attenborough also inspired Donnelly by his pure persistence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She didn\u2019t have an easy time at school \u201cbecause of everything I was doing outside of school\u201d, she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite her passion for protecting the seas and marine life, it would have been easier to adopt the more \u201cnormal\u201d preoccupations of Dublin teens. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Instead, she continued exploring and learning about her coastal home, just as Attenborough had begun  uncovering nature by poking around in the earth of the Leicestershire countryside  when he was a boy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m so glad I did stick with it, and he\u2019s definitely been an inspiration,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"David Attenborough in conversation with members of the public from the inaugural UK-wide Climate Assembly, at the House of Commons, London, September 2021. Photograph: John Nguyen\/PA Wire <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She doesn\u2019t hesitate to nominate the place where she most wants to follow his tracks and hopefully stretch the boundaries of his innovative film-making techniques even further. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s easy \u2013 the Galapagos,\u201d she says, recalling Attenborough\u2019s stunning footage for the ground-breaking 1979 series, Life on Earth, and his return visits in later years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although he did not personally travel to the islands for their inclusion in his 2016 Planet II series, being 90 years old at the time, the Galapagos produced one of its highlights \u2013 the heart-stopping flight of an iguana from rocks seething with hungry snakes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It\u2019s a segment that sticks in the mind of Minister of State with special responsibility for Nature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christopher-osullivan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christopher-osullivan\/\">Christopher O\u2019Sullivan<\/a> &#8211; along with Attenborough  with the gorillas,  and with the Lyrebird, heartbreakingly mimicking the sound of the chainsaws destroying its habitat \u2013 and too many more Attenborough moments for him to mention. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While years ago the household  had come to a standstill for the weekly airing of Glenroe, for the young O\u2019Sullivan, Attenborough was  the real TV magic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have vivid memories of being a small child, gazing up at the television at this man, a giant and an adventurer, with a steady, wise voice and a mesmerising depth of knowledge,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEvery now and then I return to these stories on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/youtube\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/youtube\/\">YouTube<\/a>, including the older ones from his first expeditions in the 1950s and \u201960s, and I wonder how many of the species he showed us back then are still in existence. <\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"Ecologist and author P&#xE1;draic Fogarty \" class=\"c-stack b-it-article-body__pullquote\" data-style-direction=\"vertical\" data-style-justification=\"start\" data-style-alignment=\"unset\" data-style-inline=\"false\" data-style-wrap=\"nowrap\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u2018I think he thought that showing people the wonder of nature would have been sufficient to safeguard it, but it wasn\u2019t\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a0Ecologist and author P\u00e1draic Fogarty <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI do know though that, had he not given us these amazing glimpses into the nature of life on Earth, we would\u2019ve lost even more.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Christopher O\u2019Sullivan hits on an issue that has caused debate and attracted some trenchant criticism: has Attenborough\u2019s work actually protected nature, or did he leave it too late to show it needed protection? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/david-attenborough-mass-extinction-is-on-the-horizon-1.3718592\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Attenborough: Mass extinction is \u2018on the horizon\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While in recent years he has silenced world leaders and business chiefs with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/david-attenborough-mass-extinction-is-on-the-horizon-1.3718592\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/david-attenborough-mass-extinction-is-on-the-horizon-1.3718592\">his plain-speaking addresses to the UN climate summits<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-economic-forum\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-economic-forum\/\">World Economic Forum<\/a>, and filmed the arresting A Life on Our Planet tracking nature\u2019s devastating decline over his own lifetime, the question remains of what might have been if he had spoken out earlier. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is an element of nature being a bit of a spectacle in his programmes, about it tipping towards nature as entertainment,\u201d McSweeney says of his first 50 years of programming. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn recent years he has pivoted towards advocacy and he has been brilliant at it, but the conservation message perhaps wasn\u2019t pushed early enough \u2013 and I think the danger of wonder over warning was there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut that\u2019s a bigger question that all of us in media need to grapple with &#8211; how do you balance trying to interest people and inspire them with things that are difficult and discomforting?\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Naturalist and broadcaster David Attenborough  at home in London in 1990. As Mary Robinson says: hope energises, fear paralyses. He\u2019s trying to not paralyse us into giving up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ecologist and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/16\/irelands-hills-are-victims-of-policy-that-hurts-farmers-and-nature\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2026\/04\/16\/irelands-hills-are-victims-of-policy-that-hurts-farmers-and-nature\/\">P\u00e1draic Fogarty<\/a> says he understands what Attenborough, who he regards as \u201ca hero\u201d, was trying to do. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think he thought that showing people the wonder of nature would have been sufficient to safeguard it, but it wasn\u2019t,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHis progammes presented the natural world in a way that wasn\u2019t accurate, and for many years we were watching these amazing scenes of abundance and diversity, right into the 2000s, when it was becoming clearer and clearer that this world he was showing on our screens did not actually exist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have sympathy for him. Nobody wants to see a walrus fall off a cliff,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fogarty is referencing the Our Planet series, which Attenborough narrated, and which faced the wrath of outraged viewers for showing walruses smashing into rocks like discarded mattresses as they plummeted to their death from cliffs where they were forced to rest because climate change melted their ice floes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn fairness to him, the fact that he has kept going and modified his message is impressive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is also clear from Attenborough\u2019s countless interviews, his numerous books and many other writings, that he knew he had to have different messages for different audiences. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> During a trip  to Ireland to deliver a public lecture at the RDS in 1980, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\">RT\u00c9<\/a> archive footage shows him jocularly dispensing advice to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gay-byrne\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gay-byrne\/\">Gay Byrne<\/a> on the Late Late Show about how to overcome fear of mice and what to do if a spider drops into your bath. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On the same trip, he shared similarly light-hearted anecdotes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pat-kenny\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pat-kenny\/\">Pat Kenny<\/a> about rattlesnakes and the unpredictability of filming in far-flung places, but he also had a much more sombre and prescient discussion about the state of the planet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think the world at large is in grave danger. You sat down and watched the TV and you saw these amazing documentaries in full. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe next generation are on their phones \u2013 that\u2019s the only screen they\u2019re interested in \u2013 and I don\u2019t know how we\u2019ll get the message to them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have to try obviously. David Attenborough has kept trying. I\u2019ll be so depressed when he\u2019s no longer with us.
