Trump calls strikes a \u2018love tap\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> accused \u200cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a> of violating a ceasefire \u200cby targeting two ships at the \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and attacking civilian areas, the country\u2019s top joint military command \u200bsaid late on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US targeted \u201can \u2060Iranian oil tanker traveling \u200cfrom Iran\u2019s \u200ccoastal \u200bwaters near Jask toward the Strait of \u2060Hormuz, \u200bas well as another \u200bvessel entering the Strait \u200cof Hormuz near the Emirati \u200bport of Fujairah,\u201d a spokesperson \u2060for Iran\u2019s \u2060Khatam al-Anbiya \u200bCentral Headquarters said in a statement carried by state media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt the same time, with the co-operation of some regional countries, they \u200ccarried out \u2060air attacks on civilian areas along the coasts of \u200cBandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The \u200cUS military said it carried \u200cout retaliatory strikes on Iran on \u200bThursday, targeting sites it said were responsible for attacking \u200bUS forces in what it \u2060called unprovoked hostilities by \u200cTehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cU.S. \u200cCentral \u200bCommand (CENTCOM) eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian \u2060military \u200bfacilities responsible \u200bfor attacking U.S. forces \u200cincluding missile and drone \u200blaunch sites; command and \u2060control locations; \u2060and \u200bintelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes,\u201d the military said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It added Iran had launched multiple \u200cmissiles, drones \u2060and small boats as three US navy \u200cdestroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz. No \u200bUS military assets were hit by the \u200bIranians, the US military said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u200cUS president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> \u200btold ABC News \u200bthat \u200cthe \u200bceasefire \u2060with Iran \u200bremained \u200bin \u200cplace despite new \u200bstrikes, \u2060according \u2060to \u200ban ABC reporter \u200con \u2060X, adding that the strikes are just a \u201clove tap\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iranian state media, \u2060citing an unnamed military official, said US military naval units operating in the area of \u200bthe strait came under Iranian missile fire following an attack by the US \u200bmilitary on an Iranian oil tanker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US \u200cmilitary \u200bvessels were forced to retreat after sustaining damage from Iranian missile \u2060strikes, it \u200badded. It was unclear \u200bwhen the incident happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iran\u2019s semi-official news \u200cagency Tasnim reported that three \u200bUS destroyers near the strait were targeted \u2060in an \u200battack by the Iranian navy. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US military said that US forces hit \u200cthe tanker\u2019s rudder with an F-18 fighter jet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This is not the first time the two sides have exchanged fire since the ceasefire started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Monday, the US military said it destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones as Tehran sought to thwart a US naval effort to open shipping through the strait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/05\/07\/trust-me-bro-iran-mocks-trumps-project-freedom-amid-wrestling-over-talks-to-end-war\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Trust me bro\u2019: Iran mocks Trump\u2019s \u2018Project Freedom\u2019 amid wrestling over talks to end warOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier on Thursday, both countries were edging toward a temporary agreement to halt their war, sources \u200cand officials said, with Tehran reviewing a proposal that would stop the fighting but leave the most contentious issues unresolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson said Tehran had not yet reached a conclusion on the emerging plan, which according to the sources centres on a short-term memorandum rather than a comprehensive peace \u200bdeal, underscoring deep divisions between the two sides. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hopes that even a partial deal could lead to the reopening of the strait moved markets, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\">oil prices falling<\/a> again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tehran and Washington have scaled back ambitions for a sweeping settlement as differences persist, particularly over Iran\u2019s nuclear programme \u2013 including the fate of its highly enriched uranium stockpiles and how long Tehran would halt nuclear work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Instead, they are working toward a temporary arrangement set out in a one-page memo aimed at preventing a return to conflict and stabilising shipping through \u200bthe strait, the sources and officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur priority is that they announce a permanent end to war and the rest of the issues could be thrashed out once they get back to direct talks,\u201d a senior Pakistani official involved in mediation between the two sides told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767177794884-20c1be6d-99c9-4c2a-8d6b-ad074c095fb1.jpeg\"\/>Iran war: What a deal could look like and why Trump blinked first<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The proposed framework would unfold in three \u2060stages: formally ending the war, resolving the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and  initiating a 30-day window for negotiations on a broader agreement, according to the sources and officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tehran said its foreign minister Abbas  Araghchi held a \u200ctelephone \u200ccall on \u200bThursday with Ishaq Dar, his counterpart in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\">Pakistan<\/a>, which has taken a leading role in mediation efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe remain optimistic,\u201d Pakistan\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told a briefing in Islamabad when asked how quickly a deal could come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA simple answer would be that we expect an agreement sooner rather than later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donald Trump \u2013 who has repeatedly played up the prospect \u2060of a breakthrough since the war began on February 28th with US-Israeli strikes on Iran \u2013 has also \u200bstruck an optimistic tone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey want to make a deal &#8230; it\u2019s very possible,\u201d he told reporters at the White House on Wednesday, \u200badding later that \u201cit\u2019ll be over quickly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The proposal would formally end the conflict in which full-scale warfare was paused by a ceasefire announced on April 7th. A halt to Israeli strikes in Lebanon is another key Iranian demand in negotiations with Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israel and Lebanon will hold talks in Washington \u200con \u200cMay 14th and 15th, a \u200cUS state department official said on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The state department official did not say who would participate in the meeting. US secretary of state Marco Rubio said \u200con Tuesday that peace was achievable but required Lebanon\u2019s government to have \u200cthe capability to fight Hizbullah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iranian officials signalled scepticism over the US proposal to end the wider war.
