{"id":475248,"date":"2026-05-08T19:53:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T19:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/475248\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T19:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T19:53:20","slug":"i29-and-dp6-restore-and-update-histori-utrecht-school-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/475248\/","title":{"rendered":"i29 and DP6 restore and update histori Utrecht school building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dutch studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/i29\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">i29<\/a> and DP6 have overhauled a 20th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/schools\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">school<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/netherlands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netherlands<\/a>, transforming it into a training institute for the Dutch Judiciary and Public Prosecution Service while honouring the building&#8217;s original features.<\/p>\n<p>Named Courthouse Building H, the four-storey building in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/utrecht\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Utrecht<\/a> has been restored to celebrate its historic character while being updated to host new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/education-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">educational<\/a> spaces and to ensure improved sustainability performance.<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"852\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2323266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/courthouse-building-renovation-dp6-i29-utrecht-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x568.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"Courthouse Building H Utrecht\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The project, commissioned by the Central Government Real Estate Agency, occupies a secondary school that opened in 1903, before being converted into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/office-interiors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offices<\/a> for the Utrecht Courthouse in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal of this project was to bring back the original qualities of the historic building, showing a clear symmetrical structure, lofty ceilings and craftsmanship in detailing,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/i29.nl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">i29<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dp6.nl\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DP6<\/a> told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2323267 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/courthouse-building-renovation-dp6-i29-utrecht-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Courthouse Building H Utrecht by i29 and DP6 ground floor space with lighting feature\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The building now houses a judicial training institute<\/p>\n<p>Visitors enter the building through the original vestibule, which has been restored, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/terrazzo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terrazzo<\/a> floors repaired and arched openings reinstated.<\/p>\n<p>A large suspended lighting feature hangs from the ceiling, and a glossy black front desk has been added. The entrance hall now also provides access to the green courtyard garden.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2323748 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/courthouse-building-renovation-dp6-i29-utrecht-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Courthouse Building H Utrecht by i29 and DP6 study space\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>New openings were added to allow light in<\/p>\n<p>The symmetrical U-shaped floorplan has been reestablished, and additional walls, suspended ceilings and fire partitions inserted during the 1990s office conversion have been removed.<\/p>\n<p>New meeting and educational spaces have been introduced to the plan, with classrooms and studio spaces located on the ground and first floors finished with muted green and warm yellow walls.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2323270 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/courthouse-building-renovation-dp6-i29-utrecht-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"Courthouse Building H Utrecht by i29 and DP6 social hub\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A social and meeting space is finished in terracotta and coral tones<\/p>\n<p>The first floor also provides flexible social and meeting spaces, with walls finished in beige, dusty terracotta and warm coral tones.<\/p>\n<p>A selection of globe lights reused from the original school building features in the corridors, and are among the decorative lighting used throughout the building.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2018\/01\/20\/eklund-terbeek-transform-20th-century-schoolhouse-into-light-filled-loft-apartment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/loft-eklund-terbeek-interiors-residential-netherlands_dezeen_sq-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Eklund Terbeek transform 20th-century schoolhouse into light-filled loft apartment\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our approach to colour, like every other decision in this project, was guided by the idea of balance between coloured and neutral surfaces,&#8221; said i29 and DP6.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To emphasise different areas and functions within the building, we applied colour in a subtle way through acoustic panels and carpeting,&#8221; the studios described.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2323272\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/courthouse-building-renovation-dp6-i29-utrecht-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1278.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Geometric metal staircase\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A new geometric staircase overlooks the building&#8217;s stained glass windows<\/p>\n<p>An existing timber staircase with slender black metal balustrades has been fully restored, reversing alterations made in the 1990s renovation when it was clad entirely in linoleum. Steps have been re-spaced and finished with wooden parquet flooring.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, a new sculptural staircase has been added, made from a white folded steel plate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2323271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/courthouse-building-renovation-dp6-i29-utrecht-netherlands-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"Courthouse Building H Utrecht by i29 and DP6 timber staircase\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The existing staircase was restored<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Balancing old and new, the new extension of the stairs was built in a sharp geometrical shape, while the existing part was restored in its original state,&#8221; said i29 and DP6.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new staircase is airy and light in contrast to the heavy monumental staircase \u2013 it rises freely from the walls and leaves space for the beautiful stained-glass windows,&#8221;
