{"id":475723,"date":"2026-05-09T02:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T02:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/475723\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T02:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T02:47:11","slug":"windsors-jobless-rate-fell-in-april-but-so-did-the-number-of-people-in-the-labour-force-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/475723\/","title":{"rendered":"Windsor&#8217;s jobless rate fell in April \u2014 but so did the number of people in the labour force, data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Windsor\u2019s jobless rate dropped by four percentage points in April to a seasonally adjusted three-month moving average of<a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/260508\/t007a-eng.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:8.1 per cent;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;8.1 per cent&quot;}\" class=\"link \"> 8.1 per cent<\/a>, according to new data from Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After posting the highest jobless rates in the country several times in 2024 and 2025, Windsor now seventh behind London, Barrie, Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo, Nanaimo, Oshawa and Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the CEO of Workforce WindsorEssex says there\u2019s not a lot to celebrate in the latest data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI think the real story here is that there&#8217;s thousands of people \u2014 in this case, 3,700 \u2014 who are leaving the labour market from last month,\u201d Justin Falconer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt seemed like in October, November, December, January, there [was] a real expansion in the total size of the labour force \u2026 But it seems to be decreasing, and it&#8217;s near where it was a year ago in terms of total size. (Tahmina Aziz\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One bright spot for Windsor-Essex was the addition of 2,600 manufacturing jobs, Falconer said, something that might come as a surprise in light of the uncertainty caused by U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He attributed that growth in part to the addition of the third shift at the Stellantis Windsor Assembly Plant in February, which is now fully represented in the three-month moving average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Windsor\u2019s population continues to grow, according to the data, and Falconer said he believes people are still moving to the city for work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">People who have been unemployed for long periods of time are often those who would benefit from acquiring new skills, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFor employers to find new talent now \u2026 they&#8217;re not going to be international students in the same way that it was a year ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not going to be immigration in the same way that it was a year ago.
