Wouldn\u2019t that solve the loneliness so many people are facing?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn800063b6sl3r33ybc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No, experts say. In fact, having a best friend like that might make things much worse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn800073b6snqusjlmx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That potential \u201cBFF\u201d already exists in artificial intelligence \u2014 a technology that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested last year could help fix feelings of loneliness and isolation. This is a problem that needs solving.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn800083b6sru23cutk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/15\/health\/who-loneliness-social-connection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization<\/a> made loneliness a global health priority in 2023. The US Surgeon General called loneliness a national epidemic the same year. And the crisis is a public health issue, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/19\/health\/loneliness-social-isolation-early-death-risk-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research has found<\/a> that people who experience social isolation had a 32% higher risk of dying early compared with those who do not.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn800093b6s0wetbi6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In this week\u2019s episode of CNN\u2019s \u201cKara Swisher Wants to Live Forever,\u201d airing at 9 p.m. ET Saturday, May 9, Swisher digs deeper into the impact loneliness has on longevity, the ways people can feel more connected, and whether AI is helping or harming efforts toward less social isolation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn8000a3b6s8cr3dl4e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Swisher, a journalist, gave both AI companionship and analog relationship building a try in this week\u2019s episode. Spoiler: AI had its draw but was no match for what she experienced in person.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn8000b3b6s0v7pxedn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSocial media was a gateway drug to AI companionship,\u201d said Dr. Sherry Turkle, the Abby Rockefeller Mauz\u00e9 Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. \u201cFirst, we talked to each other through machines. Now we talk directly to machines. We became accustomed to looking to a screen for attachment.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000d3b6swz4jfomg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It makes sense that people feeling lonely, isolated or disconnected are tempted to reach toward a machine trained to interact like a human.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000e3b6ssparf3ow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not everyone feels drawn to<strong> <\/strong>AI. The problem is that those most at risk are the ones who are already the loneliest, said Dr. Rose Guingrich, a researcher on human and AI interaction who earned a doctorate in psychology and social policy from Princeton University this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000f3b6sv4lsqd3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People who feel fulfilled in their relationships generally can see AI chatbots as a tool that they can take or leave, but people who have a strong desire for more quality emotional connections tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2509.19515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report a greater attachment<\/a> to this technology and a bigger impact on their real life, Guingrich said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000g3b6s7dstllvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For those looking for more or deeper relationships, fear of judgment or backlash can be a powerful force keeping people from interacting socially with others, Guingrich said. Someone else could disagree, get offended or think less of you depending on how an exchange goes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000h3b6srhwl3hop@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That risk shrinks when having what feels an awful lot like a conversation with a chatbot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000i3b6s0toxsgpc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            How real a user thinks these interactions are can vary, Guingrich said. Some people know that there is no human on the other side but say that the simulation of connection and understanding is enough. Others can be convinced that the algorithm they are speaking to has an emotional experience to which they can connect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000j3b6s4hefikud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople report developing things that look akin to real human friendships, mentorships and romantic partnerships, and feel as though their AI chatbot loves them back,\u201d Guingrich said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dn9000k3b6sdjn6xw4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People may feel like they love AI, but it doesn\u2019t love them back.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000m3b6sqx2ouc3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Conversations with AI are missing some key components \u2014 a void that can make these seemingly lifelike interactions unhelpful or even harmful to those who want more connection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000n3b6sl09htv86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People need to be<strong> <\/strong>face-to-face to connect, said Dr. Melissa Perry, dean of the College of Public Health at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Humans evolved to feel good when they can hear someone\u2019s tone of voice, see their facial expressions and read their body language, she added. While it feels like the AI chatbot cares and is validating, a lot of missing sensory information keeps you from connecting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000o3b6srtznnczd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIntimacy requires vulnerability \u2014 there is no intimacy without vulnerability,\u201d said Turkle, who is also founding director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self. \u201cWhat AI offers is connection without vulnerability.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000p3b6sskfxqwa6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou are not getting a sustaining form of intimacy and connection. You are getting a non-nourishing combination that may give the sense of a quick fix, but is not sustaining,\u201d she added in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000q3b6skn038jfh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vulnerability, challenge and conflict are key to the story of human development and personal growth, Perry added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000r3b6s2attj90z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But many AI platforms are modeled to be agreeable \u2013\u2013 even when it might not be helpful to comply, Guingrich said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000s3b6s3o439ji5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two dangers lurk there. One is that the AI may encourage thoughts or behaviors that are harmful to the individual or society, according to Guingrich.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000t3b6ss5hn5pmi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt has no stake in our world, our society,\u201d Turkle said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000u3b6sn8wel3wh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The other is that AI interactions with no risk of rejection may make someone more used to not having any friction in their relationships, which does not set them up for success in the real world, Guingrich said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000v3b6sh68v4o52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou have to learn how to have needs in the context of others\u2019 needs in conflict when you have different perspectives and be able to learn how to engage with others who aren\u2019t exactly the same as you,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000w3b6su2q9qlcu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That kind of challenge is essential to the human experience, Turkle said. The stakes are high, she added, both because continued loneliness is so harmful to public health and because of reports of AI chatbots <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/06\/us\/openai-chatgpt-suicide-lawsuit-invs-vis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">encouraging suicidal ideation<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna000y3b6sjjmf29a4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are giving away really what\u2019s most precious about being a person in order to have this friction-free pseudo-relationship,\u201d Turkle said. \u201cIt\u2019s killing us.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna00103b6s3vmwib0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is a world in which AI may one day be helpful to people who are lonely, Guingrich added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna00113b6sxk2vgt07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If AI platforms were designed to help people practice their social skills and give them a road map to implement the changes they need to develop more friendships and relationships, that could be a real benefit, Guingrich said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna00123b6sezeunhl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in some contexts, AI might be useful as an initial source of information for people to learn what resources are available for support, Perry added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna00133b6s785rrmwi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the ultimate goal should be to foster and enrich in-person, real-life friendships, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna00143b6sfnhv9wmf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That could mean exploring activities to meet new people, putting yourself out there for a pleasant small interaction with someone in your community, or establishing a routine get-together to strengthen ties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmox67dna00153b6s0cg4810x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Swisher tries all these things and more in this week\u2019s episode.
