{"id":47697,"date":"2025-09-06T17:45:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T17:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/47697\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T17:45:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T17:45:12","slug":"nestle-gets-a-pass-for-handling-of-ceo-affair-but-new-boss-has-no-room-to-falter-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/47697\/","title":{"rendered":"Nestl\u00e9 gets a pass for handling of CEO affair \u2013 but new boss has no room to falter \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Laurent Freixe, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nestle\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nestle\/\">Nestl\u00e9 <\/a>veteran propelled a year ago to the position of chief executive, was doing the rounds with big investors last week trying to convince that he was on top of a turnaround at the down-on-its-luck food giant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Appointed as a safe pair of hands, after his predecessor Mark Schneider\u2019s sudden ousting following a slump in the group\u2019s share price from its pandemic highs, Friexe had disappointed the market in late July when the group behind about 2,000 products, from Kit Kat to Nescaf\u00e9 coffee, posted a 0.4 per cent dip in sales volumes \u2013 or what it calls real internal growth (RIG) \u2013 in the second quarter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The second Frenchman to lead the Swiss group in its 159-year history and his finance chief \u201cstruck a reassuring tone\u201d at an analyst meeting last Friday, investment bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-morgan-chase\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-morgan-chase\/\">JP Morgan<\/a> said in a note sent around to clients that afternoon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He indicated the RIG decline had been driven by China and Nestl\u00e9\u2019s health science unit, behind brands such as Nature\u2019s Bounty vitamin gummies to constipation-fighting OptiFibre powder, and that the second quarter was likely to be the low point amid a refocusing on core brands and push on six big bets, including cold coffee, air fryer seasoning and gourmet cat food. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Three days later, however, the 63-year-old was out of a job \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/09\/01\/nestle-dismisses-ceo-laurent-freixe-after-probe-into-romantic-relationship\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/09\/01\/nestle-dismisses-ceo-laurent-freixe-after-probe-into-romantic-relationship\/\">dismissed for concealing an affair with a marketing executive<\/a>, a direct report, whom he had promoted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He\u2019s not the first CEO to fall for a subordinate. But while boards of the past may have been willing to ignore such indiscretions (this one started with an anonymous tip through an internal whistleblower hotline), the world has changed in the wake of the #MeToo movement and a heightened investor focus on governance (the \u201cg\u201d part of environmental, social and governance). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even consensual liaisons can lead to accusations of favouritism. US retailer Kohl fired Ashley Buchanan, its CEO of just over 100 days, in May after it emerged he failed to disclose a relationship with an outside vendor and that he had steered business her way. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Why are some independent Irish breweries turning off their taps and closing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kerry man Bernard Looney resigned two years ago this month as chief executive of oil big BP for not disclosing personal relationships with colleagues. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While shares in Nestl\u00e9 fell as much as 2.3 per cent in Zurich on Tuesday as the market first digested news of Freixe\u2019s exit, they subsequently rallied to end the week little changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Investors have given the board a pass for being able to assure them that it had a good handle on governance and succession planning. Rather than opt for an interim CEO like Astronomer, Kohl\u2019s or BP, it immediately promoted Austria-born company-lifer Philipp Navratil, most recently head of its Nespresso unit, to the top job. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But with the stock down 34 per cent over the past three years \u2013 while its nearest peer Unilever, which has had its own issues in recent years, has added 22 per cent \u2013 analysts such as Tom Sykes at Deutsche Bank reckon the group needs to get back to volume sales growth of at least 2 per cent, albeit in an ongoing tough environment for consumers globally, for it to start to outperform the sector. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2023\/12\/13\/former-bp-boss-bernard-looney-to-forfeit-324m-after-serious-misconduct\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Former BP boss, Irishman Bernard Looney, to forfeit \u00a332.4m after \u2018serious misconduct\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Caution among US consumers has been amplified recently by tariff concerns and Nestl\u00e9 pushing through price rises pushed in the first half of the year, mainly to recoup a spike in coffee and cocoa, two of the main commodities it buys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">HSBC analyst Jeremy Fialko says Navratil will continue Freixe\u2019s turnaround strategy, involving cutting costs, simplifying the organisation, innovation and ramping up marketing for six \u201cbig bets\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, many investors are likely to push for more fundamental change, such as slimming down its stable of 2,000 products \u2013 with some analysts even talking about the need for a potential break-up of the business. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are rumblings elsewhere in the sector.
