{"id":479098,"date":"2026-05-11T11:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T11:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/479098\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T11:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T11:38:11","slug":"even-a-small-increase-in-ultraprocessed-foods-can-harm-cognitive-function-study-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/479098\/","title":{"rendered":"Even a small increase in ultraprocessed foods can harm cognitive function, study suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/WWCDO5MHKZAVFKQ2OCJ2YY44CU?auth=30ffceacf2ba3b91f0ea2929a9b5ad35506887889fa9adc4a542d97f9e79925c&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Ultraprocessed foods contain little, if any, whole foods and are typically high in calories, fatty, salty, sugary and contain numerous additives.Yulia337\/Getty Images\/iStockphoto<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">An enormous amount of evidence has linked ultraprocessed foods to an increased risk of many chronic diseases, including hypertension, coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">More recently, though, research has raised concerns about the harmful effects of ultraprocessed foods on brain health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Several studies have tied these foods to poorer cognitive performance and accelerated cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Now, new research published April 23 suggests that higher daily intakes of ultraprocessed food \u2013 even a small amount\u2013 can worsen thinking skills and increase dementia risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Here\u2019s what to know about the latest study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ultraprocessed-foods-diet-grocery-cooking-canada-nova\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">My family of five tried to cut out ultraprocessed foods for a week. Here\u2019s what we learned<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>What are ultraprocessed foods?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) are formulations of ingredients, typically made by deconstructing whole foods, altering and recombining them with additives to flavour, sweeten, bleach, colour, emulsify, texturize and preserve. They contain little, if any, whole food. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The processing of UPFs strips away vitamins, minerals, fibre and protective phytochemicals while, at the same time, adding unhealthy fats, added sugars and sodium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Nova food classification system, introduced in 2009, categorizes foods based on their level of processing from group 1 (least processed) to group 4 (most processed).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The top contributors to Canadian\u2019s ultraprocessed food intake are sugar-sweetened drinks, packaged snacks (chips, crackers, pretzels) and baked goods (cookies, cakes, pastries), sweetened breakfast cereals and desserts, ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat meals and processed meats. <\/p>\n<p><b>The new research<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The study, published in the journal Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment &amp; Disease Monitoring, investigated the association of ultraprocessed food consumption with cognitive performance and dementia risk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The researchers examined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/diet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/diet\/\">diets<\/a> and cognitive health of 2,192 Australian adults, aged 40 to 70, who were free of dementia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Participants\u2019 diets over the previous 12 months were assessed and their intake of UPFs was classified using the Nova system. The researchers also calculated their Mediterranean diet scores to account for overall diet quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/life\/wellness\/article-nutritional-value-vegetables-diet-food-advice\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leslie Beck: Five ways to boost the nutritional value from your vegetables<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Participants underwent cognitive testing to measure processing speed (how fast the brain works when doing a mental task) and visual attention (the brain\u2019s ability to focus on and quickly respond to what you see). Together, these scores were used to generate an overall attention score. A separate memory score was also determined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Researchers used a validated risk score to estimate participants\u2019 likelihood of developing dementia later in life, based on age, sex, education, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, body weight and physical activity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">They also looked specifically at the modifiable components of this score \u2013 blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, physical activity \u2013 to better understand how diet might influence aspects of dementia risk that are within a person\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p><b>Small daily increase in UPFs linked to poorer attention<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Participants consumed, on average, 41 per cent of their daily calories from ultraprocessed foods \u2013 similar to Canadian adults (about 44 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The most commonly consumed ultraprocessed foods were dairy-based desserts, sugar\u2011sweetened beverages, packaged salty snacks and potato products, processed meats and ready\u2011to\u2011heat meals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">For every 10 per cent increase in ultraprocessed foods \u2013 roughly 150 grams per day, about a small bag of potato chips \u2013 participants had consistently lower scores on cognitive tests measuring attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A higher intake of UPFs was also linked to a higher dementia risk score, largely explained by modifiable risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, body weight and physical activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">This finding underscores the importance of maintaining metabolic health to protect brain health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Notably, these associations persisted regardless of overall diet quality (Mediterranean diet score), suggesting that the degree of food processing \u2013 not just lower intakes of beneficial nutrients \u2013 may play a role in cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">No association was found between ultraprocessed food intake and memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Because attention is central to cognitive functions such as learning, problem solving and memory, the researchers speculated that early changes in attention may precede broader cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p><b>Strengths, limitations <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The study\u2019s strengths include its large sample size and use of validated cognitive testing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">As well, the researchers adjusted for overall diet quality, which helps distinguish the effects of food processing itself from simply having a less healthy diet overall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">However, the study looked at diet and cognition at a single point in time and relied on self\u2011reported diet information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">As a result, it found an association between UPFs and cognition;
