{"id":479295,"date":"2026-05-11T14:34:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T14:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/479295\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T14:34:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T14:34:11","slug":"enrolments-in-primary-schools-set-to-fall-significantly-department-of-education-says-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/479295\/","title":{"rendered":"Enrolments in primary schools set to fall significantly, Department of Education says \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Enrolments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/primary-level\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/primary-level\/\">primary schools<\/a> are projected to decline significantly over the coming decade while first-year student numbers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/second-level\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/second-level\/\">second level<\/a> have already begun to fall, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-education\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-education\/\">Department of Education<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, in a briefing paper for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\">Oireachtas<\/a> committee last month the department maintained there could be \u201csignificant local and regional variations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor example, new residential developments, such as in counties around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a>, can drive a level of demand for school places that runs significantly higher than overall national trends,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department indicated that spare capacity at primary and second level was being targeted at special education where demand is growing significantly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt primary level nationally, enrolments are projected to decline significantly over the coming decade. This will vary at local level and some areas where there is very substantial housing development will experience growth. In many areas, however, schools will experience drops in enrolment and this has already had an impact on some locations. It is important that this existing and oncoming capacity is utilised appropriately to meet school place needs across the relevant area\u201d, the department told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dail-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dail-eireann\/\">D\u00e1il<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-accounts-committee\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-accounts-committee\/\">Public Accounts Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said at post-primary level, national enrolments are expected to begin to decline from 2026, although  first-year enrolments have already been reducing in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSchool capacity at post-primary level is more complex, given subject choices and timetabling options; however, good management can achieve high efficiency in the use of school accommodation. Given the increasing requirements for special-education provision, it is important that all schools make best use of available accommodation, and the department is working closely with schools, patrons and management bodies to support this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said the special-education needs repurposing scheme had been successful in ensuring that spare capacity at primary and post-primary schools was maximised, \u201cwith 80 per cent of new special classes for 2025\/26 being established in repurposed classroom accommodation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department maintained that school place pressures were \u201cnot typically driven by lack of capacity in an area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said at post-primary level (where there was most demographic pressure) \u201cthere were unfilled first-year places in every county and in 83 per cent of the 314 school planning areas in the 2024\/25 academic year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor example, across County Dublin, 38 of the 40 school planning areas had unfilled first year places. In County Kildare, the only school planning area without remaining first year places for 2024\/25 were Kilcullen and Monasterevin, both of which draw students from outside their local area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSchool place pressures are most typically driven by school- of-choice factors, which can include a draw of students from outside the local area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2026\/03\/04\/fifth-of-secondary-schools-forced-to-drop-subjects-due-to-teacher-shortages-survey-finds\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fifth of secondary schools forced to drop subjects due to teacher shortages, survey findsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> senator has called for a teacher relocation scheme to help retention issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Senator Gareth Scahill maintained inaction could risk deepening pressures felt by teachers across the education system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere isn\u2019t a clear and workable voluntary relocation pathway for post-primary teachers. It means many teachers feel locked in place, unable to move closer to home due to inflexible administrative arrangements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTeachers want to see fair and transparent mobility options.
