Combine those with one of the\u00a0<a data-ylk=\"slk:sunniest climates in Europe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellocanaryislands.com\/experiences\/hours-of-sunshine\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">sunniest climates in Europe<\/a>, volcanic\u00a0wine-growing regions, a taste-bud-tingling local kitchen, and world-class surf, and it&#8217;s easy to see why this string of rugged volcanic rocks in the Atlantic Ocean has been a major draw for decades \u2014 nay, <a data-ylk=\"slk:centuries;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grancanaria.com\/turismo\/en\/the-island\/history\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">centuries<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Ready to book a flight? Not so fast, for the Canary Islands have made a conspicuous appearance on the latest edition of <a data-ylk=\"slk:Fodor&#039;s No List;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fodors.com\/news\/photos\/no-list-2026\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Fodor&#8217;s No List<\/a>. Consider it the antidote to all those bucket lists out there. These destinations are ones that travel experts at Fodor&#8217;s (a guidebook publisher with more than 80 years of experience in the industry) think you might want to reconsider visiting in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The pause for thought can be for any number of reasons, but overtourism seems to be the major driver behind the rise of the sun-soaked Canaries here. Fodor&#8217;s points out how soaring arrival numbers in these ocean-washed isles are exacerbating a cascade of other issues, with everything from rising housing costs to traffic jams to loss of biodiversity. According to statistics from the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Canary Islands Tourism Observatory;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/observatorioturisticodecanarias.com\/en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Canary Islands Tourism Observatory<\/a>, a public portal for measuring and tracking the industry across the islands, a whopping 18.4 million people visited in 2025. That set a whole new record for the region, representing an almost\u00a03.5% uptick from the previous year, which was already a\u00a0record breaker\u00a0itself (via <a data-ylk=\"slk:Canarian Weekly;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canarianweekly.com\/posts\/The-Canaries-had-record-tourist-figures-in-2025-but-their-stays-were-shorter-time-and-they-spent-less\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Canarian Weekly<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Large-scale demonstrations by worried locals reported by <a data-ylk=\"slk:Reuters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/thousands-protest-against-overtourism-spains-canary-islands-2025-05-18\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> in May 2025 highlight some of the tensions. According to the news agency, protesters held banners declaring that the &#8220;Canaries have a limit,&#8221; and objected to collapsing infrastructure, lack of affordable housing, and struggling water supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, housing and water are two major points in the debate. The Canaries might have some of the <a data-ylk=\"slk:most beautiful islands in Spain;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.islands.com\/1664989\/most-beautiful-best-islands-spain-never-heard\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">most beautiful islands in Spain<\/a>, but they don&#8217;t get all that much rain. Meanwhile, a <a data-ylk=\"slk:report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/contentassets\/aa500f6c8cb749d7ac324a4065395386\/203.the-canary-islands-experience.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by Global Water Partnership recognizes historic water shortages across the region, which contribute to the &#8220;over-exploitation&#8221; of resources. When it comes to housing, <a data-ylk=\"slk:Express;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/2153526\/canary-islands-prices-rocket-tenerife-gran-canaria\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Express<\/a> reports that the cost of monthly rents in key Canarian towns has skyrocketed in recent years. That&#8217;s despite a crackdown on non-licensed holiday rentals, which could make up almost a third of the whole market in the Canaries by some estimations (per <a data-ylk=\"slk:Canarian Weekly;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canarianweekly.com\/posts\/Over-30-of-Holiday-Lets-in-the-Canary-Islands-are-operating-without-a-licence\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Canarian Weekly<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Worthy Spanish dupe destinations for the Canary Islands<img alt=\"A beach town in Northern Spain\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_islands_628\/ac6258729dbe3fdf3c2581fbdfd3e555.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A beach town in Northern Spain &#8211; Mazur Travel\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>If you take Fodor&#8217;s advice and decide that the Canaries need a breather this year, don&#8217;t go thinking that Spain is totally off the menu. There are stacks of alternative options in this culturally rich country that can offer a similar dose of sand, sea, sun, and R&amp;R.<\/p>\n<p>The obvious choice could be Spain&#8217;s other iconic chain of isles in the Mediterranean: The Balearics. Home to the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Mallorcan &quot;party capital&quot; and resort city, Magaluf;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.islands.com\/1737406\/mallorca-hottest-resort-city-magaluf-islands-party-capital-world-class-nightlife-beaches\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mallorcan &#8220;party capital&#8221; and resort city, Magaluf<\/a>, and the iconic\u00a0White Isle of Ibiza, they&#8217;ve actually had their own <a data-ylk=\"slk:struggles with overtourism;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2024\/05\/24\/everything-is-collapsing-ibiza-is-the-latest-spanish-hotspot-to-fight-back-against-overtou\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">struggles with overtourism<\/a> in recent years, but visiting during\u00a0the low season is better for hiking, experiencing local culture, and traveling sustainably. To mimic the treks offered by mountain-carved Tenerife, you could strap on the boots and climb the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Serra de Tramuntana;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1371\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Serra de Tramuntana<\/a>, a UNESCO-tagged range with ancient farms and olive groves. To recall those Canarian sands, head to <a data-ylk=\"slk:Cala Macarelleta;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/worlds50beaches.com\/cala-macarella\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Cala Macarelleta<\/a>, a white-sand inlet on Menorca that&#8217;s been ranked among the top 50 beaches on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Or there&#8217;s northern Spain. This really is a less-visited quarter of the country.
