The <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/prince-william\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Prince of Wales<\/a> has toured a new centre run by James\u2019 Place, a charity which provides free therapy for men in suicidal crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Today, he met both staff and men whose lives have been saved by the charity at its other locations. As he entered the new facility, William was greeted by a host of staff members, where he joked about how many of them were all in one small room. That is the aim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Prince of Wales meeting people at the suicide prevention charity in Birmingham\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778542814_445_1_The-Prince-Of-Wales-Officially-Opens-James-Place-Birmingham.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"William encouraged men to talk more about suicide and mental health struggles\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">William encouraged men to talk more about suicide and mental health struggles(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After their meeting, Marcus Davies, a former service-user and a trustee at the charity, who is from The Wirral in Merseyside, said: \u201c(William) was surprisingly normal, actually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;I think when we sat down and got into the conversation, he was surprisingly normal, very relaxed, very open and interested in what we had to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Another former service-user, Ben Brand, who travelled from Bedford for the prince\u2019s visit, said: \u201cWe were very nervous to begin with, but once he got in the room and sat down, it relaxed very quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It was like just talking to anybody, really. You wouldn\u2019t think you were speaking to the prince, the future King. It was just speaking to another man, just having a chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Davies said the prince\u2019s visit could help inform more men in crisis about the charity, as he said: \u201cI think for that publicity, his reach and the audience that he can reach through his status and who he is, I think that\u2019s just critical to getting that message far and wide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI had never heard of James\u2019s Place prior to my GP referring me. It\u2019s so important that men know that it is there and available as a service to help those that need it. William joked: \u201cI think mine might be a little bit cleaner than yours by the end of your [challenge].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">James\u2019 Place was founded in memory of James Wentworth-Stanley, a Newcastle University student, who took his own life in 2006 at age 21, with this year marking 20 years since his death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Since 2018, the charity\u2019s three existing centres have saved over 5,100 men\u2019s lives. The charity solely supports men, who account for over 75 per cent of suicides in the UK. The Birmingham venue is the fourth of the charity\u2019s centres, following successful programmes in Liverpool, London and Newcastle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Prince of Wales speaking with mental health representatives \" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2_The-Prince-of-Wales-Visits-James-Place-Birmingham.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"The Prince of Wales spoke with mental health representatives \" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">The Prince of Wales spoke with mental health representatives (Image: Andrew Parsons \/ Kensington Palace)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Opening their London centre in 2022, William said at the time, \u201cThe one takeaway for me is the idea that there is a solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI think men sometimes get so lost in the detail, they forget the bigger picture and being able to have that bit of support that can move them forward and there is hope and a brighter future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Earlier this year, William also met Allan Brownrigg, director of clinical services at James\u2019 Place, and former client Nathan, to discuss men\u2019s mental health on an <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/3am\/celebrity-news\/breaking-prince-william-admits-emotional-36740122\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">episode of BBC Radio 1\u2019s Life Hacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">During the conversation, William described his mental health &#8220;deteriorating&#8221; while volunteering as an air ambulance pilot.
