{"id":480506,"date":"2026-05-12T07:42:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/480506\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T07:42:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T07:42:13","slug":"horror-of-war-action-movie-carte-blanche-cannes-bound-with-latido","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/480506\/","title":{"rendered":"Horror of War Action Movie &#8216;Carte Blanche&#8217; Cannes-Bound With Latido"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/latido-films\/\" id=\"auto-tag_latido-films\" data-tag=\"latido-films\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Latido Films<\/a> will bring to market \u201cCarte Blanche,\u201d a bloody period war action movie directed by Oscar-winning producer <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/gerardo-herrero\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gerardo-herrero\" data-tag=\"gerardo-herrero\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gerardo Herrero<\/a> (\u201cThe Secret in Their Eyes\u201d), part of a buzzy batch of buzzy quality genre movies made at scale which marks Spain out at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/marche-du-film-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marche-du-film-2\" data-tag=\"marche-du-film-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March\u00e9 du Film<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSet in the Moroccan desert in 1921, where Spain wages a disastrous war against Berber tribesmen of the Rif, after the massacre of Spanish conscript soldiers, an eight-man elite Spanish Legion unit sets off commanded by a sergeant hell bent on revenge after his brother\u2019s torture and murder in the massacre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe raid on a local Berber village soon degenerates into racist-fueled rape, torture and slaughter and a suicide mission, as the squad attempts escape down an arid canyon, cornered by local marksmen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFast-rising Spanish star Ivan Pellicer (\u201cQuerer\u201d) plays hero Faura, who maintains a moral compass. \u201cCarte Blanche\u201d also stars Salva Reina (\u201cThe 47\u201d) and Victor Clavijo (\u201cThe Wait\u201d), the squad\u2019s psychotic sergeant. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmploying crafted special effects, \u201cCarte Blanche\u201d was shot in the same arid scrub-desert of Almer\u00eda used by David Lean and Sergio Leone.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBased on the same-titled 2004 prize winning novel by Spain\u2019s Lorenzo Silva, \u201cCarte Blanche\u201d is inspired by historical fact. Spain\u2019s Rif War, where future Spanish dictator Francisco Franco won his spurs, served as a crucible for the values and military tactics of the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War where Franco treated his Republican enemy with the same humanity dealt out to Rif inhabitants.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe great film industries have tackled the most terrible moments of their history, and done so with courage. \u201cIt\u2019s time we do this with the Rif War,\u201d said Herrero.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver a long career, since he burst onto the Spanish scene in the late 1980s, at least two of Herrero\u2019s best films as a director have been unspooled in conflict zones: 1997\u2019s Sarajevo-set \u201cComanche Territory,\u201d and 2024\u2019s Syria espionage thriller \u201cRaqqa: Spy vs. Spy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGerardo Herrero is proving movie after movie he is a master director of films that capture audience attention and not let it go. \u2018Carte Blanche\u201d\u2019is a gripping action film that does not let you breath while watching it and stays with you when the film finishes,\u201d Latido Films head Antonio Saura told Variety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLatido Films\u2019 2026 March\u00e9 du Film slate also features \u201cThe Harvester,\u201d from David P\u00e9rez Sa\u00f1udo, one of Spain\u2019s most rated younger directors, behind \u201cAne.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA big-budget film for Spain starring Antonio de la Torre (\u201cThe Realm\u201d) and Patricia L\u00f3pez Arnaiz (Sundays\u201d), it turns on Spain\u2019s first documented serial killer, boasting meticulous 1870s period construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlso making its market premiere is \u201cLa Luz,\u201d from San Sebasti\u00e1n winner Fernando Franco (\u201cWounded\u201d).
