{"id":480837,"date":"2026-05-12T12:29:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/480837\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T12:29:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:29:17","slug":"abca-creates-industrial-themed-agramonte-house-in-porto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/480837\/","title":{"rendered":"ABCA creates industrial-themed Agramonte House in Porto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Exposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/concrete\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concrete<\/a>, steel-framed windows and handmade bricks reference the formerly industrial site of Agramonte House, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Portugal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Portugal<\/a> designed by local studio Ant\u00f3nio Bessa Cruz Architects.<\/p>\n<p>The home is located on the site of a former car repair workshop next to Agramonte Cemetery in Porto, which the client had originally planned on converting into a loft-style home.<\/p>\n<p>When this proved structurally impossible, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abca.pt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ant\u00f3nio Bessa Cruz Architects<\/a> (ABCA) decided to instead replace it with a new-build home that echoed the former industrial building, informing both the material palette and insular, courtyard layout.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2325828 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/agramonte-house-abca-architecture-residential-adaptive-reuse-porto_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Agramonte House by Ant\u00f3nio Bessa Cruz Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Ant\u00f3nio Bessa Cruz Architects has created Agramonte House<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The space lacked any conditions for habitation or straightforward renovation, but the client wanted to convert it into a loft, so I set out to develop an architectural project inspired by that context,&#8221; founder Ant\u00f3nio Cruz told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The main challenge was to design a dwelling that ensured abundant natural light, generous open spaces, and minimal to no visual connection with the exterior \u2013 particularly avoiding views toward the cemetery,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The choice of materials stems from this intention to create a &#8216;loft&#8217; atmosphere, achieved through the use of concrete, solid brick, steel and glass partitions, and dark oak wood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2325842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/agramonte-house-abca-architecture-residential-adaptive-reuse-porto_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Industrial-themed Porto home\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The industrial-themed house replaces a car workshop<\/p>\n<p>To block out the nearby cemetery, the L-shaped form of Agramonte House presents an almost entirely blank face to the street, save for a row of high-level windows that draw daylight into a central living, dining and kitchen space.<\/p>\n<p>Flanking a large wooden dining table at the centre of this space are two warehouse-like glazed sections, with openable doors and windows framed in gridded black steel. They open onto paved, high-walled courtyards on either side.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/04\/04\/fala-atelier-house-of-many-faces-warehouse-porto\/\" rel=\"nofollow faces&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The kitchen is wrapped by full-height cupboards finished in dark oak, while in the lounge area, a modular grey sofa is framed by exposed concrete walls opposite a large concrete staircase illuminated by clerestory windows.<\/p>\n<p>In the perpendicular wing of the ground floor, three bedrooms and two bathrooms sit off a brick-lined corridor, each oriented to benefit from views over one of the home&#8217;s courtyards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2325834 size-full\" bed raised on a timber plinth and a walk-in wardrobe lined with dark oak.<\/p>\n<p>In the bedrooms, the exposed concrete walls on the ground floor are swapped for a mixture of white brickwork and larger blockwork walls.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2325821 size-full\" Ant\u00f3nio Bessa Cruz Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The ground floor opens onto courtyards<\/p>\n<p>For the bathrooms, a mixture of charcoal-painted blockwork and bricks is accompanied by white tiles with black grout, tubular metal fittings and black-steel screens that continue the industrial feel.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in Porto, local practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/04\/04\/fala-atelier-house-of-many-faces-warehouse-porto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fala Atelier previously transformed a warehouse into a home<\/a> defined by large, open-plan spaces, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/06\/27\/alvaro-siza-leca-de-balio-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c1lvaro Siza
