{"id":480984,"date":"2026-05-12T14:39:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T14:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/480984\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T14:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T14:39:11","slug":"rodent-infestations-and-spider-egg-sacs-among-reasons-for-food-closure-orders-in-dublin-cork-and-waterford-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/480984\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodent infestations and spider egg sacs among reasons for food closure orders in Dublin, Cork and Waterford \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rodent infestations, spider egg sacs in food storage areas, inadequate cleaning and mouldy walls were among the reasons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/restaurant\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/restaurant\/\">restaurants<\/a> were served with closure orders by the food safety watchdog in April. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its latest report, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-safety-authority-of-ireland-fsai\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-safety-authority-of-ireland-fsai\/\">Food Safety Authority of Ireland<\/a> (FSAI) reported that environmental health officers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive-hse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-service-executive-hse\/\">Health Service Executive<\/a> (HSE) served closure orders on a total of five restaurants and food services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Lily House on South Square in Rosscarbery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Co Cork<\/a>; CraftCup, Heather Road, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sandyford-business-district\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sandyford-business-district\/\">Sandyford Business Park<\/a>, Dublin 18; Yama on Gerald Griffin Street, Blackpool, Cork; the Empoli Restaurant in the Plaza, Main Street, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/swords\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/swords\/\">Swords<\/a>, Co Dublin; and Dooly\u2019s Fish and Chips at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/waterford\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/waterford\/\">Waterford<\/a> &amp; Tramore Racecourse were all served with closure orders, with some lifted within 48 hours and others still in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Yama was found to have an accumulation of grease and food debris within and to the back wall of the wok station in the main kitchen. Touch points within the kitchen and ancillary areas were greasy and dirty. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Grease, debris and mould particles were noted on the door of the staff toilet and rear yard, while cobwebs and spider egg sacs were noted at high levels in the rear preparation kitchen. The closure order was served on April 23rd and lifted two days later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was an active rodent infestation noted in the Lily House food storeroom and kitchen, with rodent droppings in multiple areas  of both,  and the inspector also noted that the premises was not maintained in a clean condition. The order had not yet been lifted at the time the report was issued by the FSAI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rodent droppings were evident in multiple locations of CraftCup, adequate procedures were not in place to control pests and neither were there adequate cleaning and disinfection procedures. The closure order was served on April 15th and lifted on April 28th. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Listed among the reasons for the closure order served on Empoli was an absence of monitoring records for deliveries and for reheating high-risk foods such as chicken. The closure order was served on April 7th and lifted on April 9th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dooly\u2019s Fish &amp; Chips \u2013 which remained closed, according to the FSAI report \u2013 was found not to have been approved by a competent authority for the operations taking place,  specifically the manufacture and wholesale of foods of animal origin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/05\/12\/state-property-registration-authority-looks-to-recoup-overpayments-to-266-workers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">State property registration authority looks to recoup overpayments to 266 workersOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">FSAI chief executive Greg Dempsey reminded food businesses of the importance of  maintaining robust food safety standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEvery food business must have effective food safety management systems in place to ensure that food is stored, prepared and served safely,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCleanliness, pest control, proper staff training and food traceability are fundamental requirements and are essential to protecting public health.
