\n\tTwelve-year-old Jacobi Jupe, who plays the title role in \u201cHamnet<\/a>,\u201d broke down in tears mid-interview at the Variety studio at the Toronto Film Festival<\/a>, describing the devastation of embodying William Shakespeare\u2019s ill-fated son, and calling the experience \u201clife-changing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was so utterly devastating,\u201d Jupe said, pausing as he grew emotional. \u201cWhen I ended that shoot, there was one thing that I wanted to do, and it was probably to live on for Hamnet because I don\u2019t think it was fair on him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs he struggled to continue, Jupe was consoled by his on-screen parents, Jessie Buckley<\/a> and Paul Mescal<\/a>, who embraced him during the emotional moment. A boy beyond his years, with the support of a fantastic cast and filmmaking crew.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Buckley, who recently became a mother herself, playing Agnes, Shakespeare\u2019s wife, also carried additional weight.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know if anything really fully prepares you completely for motherhood,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat it unlocked in me, what I was looking for as a woman, was a tenderness, which led me towards becoming a mother in some shape or form.\u201d She added: \u201cI would never want to experience what Agnes experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMescal portrays Shakespeare, though Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s novel \u2014 and filmmaker Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s adaptation \u2014 shifts focus away from the famed playwright to Agnes and their family dynamic.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI just tried to put him in my body rather than in my head,\u201d Mescal shared. \u201cPeople think about Shakespeare as this intellectual beast, and he clearly was a very smart man, but I think there is a real animal quality too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor drew inspiration from Shakespeare\u2019s plays, asking himself: \u201cWhat would\u2019ve caused somebody to write something like this? What\u2019s the psychological state of somebody who writes \u2018King Lear?\u2019 What\u2019s the psychological state of somebody who writes \u2018A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTwo-time Oscar nominee Emily Watson, who delivers a one-scene wonder, praised the creative environment on set.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt felt like a privilege to be in the room,\u201d Watson revealed. \u201cMy life began with Shakespeare. Just to be touching this story felt like an amazing thing to be doing.\u201d She singled out Zhao\u2019s vision: \u201cJust to see the electricity and magic being summoned by this living witch here \u2014 I had the best seat in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZhao, who became the first woman of color to win the Academy Award for best director for 2020\u2019s \u201cNomadland\u201d five years ago, said she hopes \u201cHamnet\u201d provides audiences with a safe emotional space.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf people can walk away having had the safe space just to feel things they might not feel comfortable [with], or given the space to feel, [and] could process some emotions, that two and a half hours is worth it,\u201d Zhao said.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe added: \u201cIf we can all trust that every one of us has the ability to alchemize all the pain we had experienced in life \u2014 sometimes it doesn\u2019t make any sense \u2014 but it\u2019s not just William Shakespeare. We all have that ability.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHamnet,\u201d which premiered last week at Telluride<\/a>, continues its festival run as awards season buzz builds around Zhao\u2019s direction and the cast\u2019s performances. During the interview, the stars also teased their next projects. Buckley next stars in \u201cThe Bride,\u201d Maggie Gyllenhaal\u2019s take on the Bride of Frankenstein story, which she described as \u201cbeing plugged into an electrical current and turned up to 20.\u201d Mescal is in rehearsals to play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes\u2019 upcoming four-part Beatles project, citing \u201cMichelle\u201d as his current favorite song by the band.
