{"id":481764,"date":"2026-05-13T01:08:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T01:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/481764\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T01:08:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T01:08:10","slug":"irelands-newest-official-bathing-area-off-limits-to-swimmers-this-summer-over-water-pollution-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/481764\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland\u2019s newest official bathing\u00a0area off limits to swimmers this summer over water pollution \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The country\u2019s newest official bathing area, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dun-laoghaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dun-laoghaire\/\">D\u00fan Laoghaire<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dun-laoghaire-baths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dun-laoghaire-baths\/\">Baths<\/a>, has failed a pollution test and will be out of bounds for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/swimming\/\">swimmers<\/a> this summer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The waters, which were only formally designated a bathing area last year after a new jetty and access steps were developed, were found to be polluted from sewage overflows and dog faeces. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is the only site of 153 popular swimming beaches, lakes and urban coves monitored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/environmental-protection-agency-epa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/environmental-protection-agency-epa\/\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (EPA) to fail to meet the minimum standards in tests carried out over the official bathing season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, almost half the sites were under bathing restrictions or precautionary warnings at some point during the season last year because of pollution concerns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The number of warnings to swimmers to stay out of the water almost doubled last year, the EPA report shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Notices were issued 205 times in 2025, compared to 113 times in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many notices were precautionary and prompted by heavy rain that left local authorities fearful that overflowing drains and sewers and run-off from farmland could flood the waters with dirt and disease. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were 79 confirmed pollution incidents \u2013 up from 34 in 2024. Where incidents were confirmed, the prohibition was often longer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Sustainable Water Network (Swan), which represents environmental and community organisations concerned with water quality, said such notices \u201cshould not become accepted as normal\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe solution is to address the root causes of pollution in the first place,\u201d said policy officer Puneeta Sreenivas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" Government action such as accelerating upgrades to wastewater treatment, stronger measures to reduce agricultural pollution at source and preventing pollution from septic tanks and private treatment systems entering streams that feed bathing waters.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Swan also pointed out that 39 per cent of the 120 sites deemed \u201cexcellent\u201d were under a warning or restriction at some stage during the season, and said the season was too short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMonitoring of bathing waters should also be done outside of the bathing season to protect the growing number of year-round swimmers and recreational water users,\u201d Sreenivas said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Regulations only require official bathing sites to be tested from June 1st to September 15th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" \u00c9ireann<\/a> said it was working to improve wastewater treatment and it noted the EPA report showed improvements in the ranking at several bathing sites where wastewater investments had recently been completed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said an \u201cunexpected intense rainfall event\u201d had caused some of the problems at D\u00fan Laoghaire Baths. <\/p>\n<p
