{"id":482371,"date":"2026-05-13T10:00:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/482371\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T10:00:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:00:22","slug":"tottenhams-james-maddison-presents-new-penalty-evidence-to-petrified-referees-after-leeds-draw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/482371\/","title":{"rendered":"Tottenham&#8217;s James Maddison presents new penalty evidence to &#8220;petrified&#8221; referees after Leeds draw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsmole.co.uk\/football\/spurs\/\" title=\"Tottenham Hotspur\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> midfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsmole.co.uk\/people\/james-maddison\/\" title=\"James Maddison\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Maddison<\/a> has hit out at &#8220;petrified&#8221; Premier League referees after he was denied a late penalty in Monday&#8217;s 1-1 draw with Leeds United.<\/p>\n<p>Roberto De Zerbi&#8217;s men had the chance to move four points clear of the relegation zone on home soil, and they were on course to do that thanks to Mathys Tel&#8217;s stunning opening goal in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>The Frenchman was the villain at the other end of the field, though, catching Ethan Ampadu with a high foot in the penalty area, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to convert the spot kick.<\/p>\n<p>Spurs then wanted a penalty of their own deep into added time when Maddison went down under pressure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsmole.co.uk\/people\/lukas-nmecha\/\" title=\"Lukas Nmecha\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lukas Nmecha<\/a>, but Jarred Gillett waved away the appeals on the pitch, and his decision was backed up by the VAR room.<\/p>\n<p>Craig Pawson and assistant Nick Hopton decided that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsmole.co.uk\/football\/spurs\/relegation-battle\/news\/why-spurs-were-denied-penalty-against-leeds-as-statement-issued_597391.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>the Leeds attacker had played the ball<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsmole.co.uk\/football\/arsenal\/news\/200-percent-not-100-percent-de-zerbis-emphatic-verdict-on-raya-var-controversy_597395.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>De Zerbi refused to criticise the officials<\/strong><\/a> in his post-match press conference.<\/p>\n<p>James Maddison claims referee got Tottenham-Leeds penalty decision wrong<img decoding=\"async\" data-img-id=\"159949\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/sportsmole-media-prod.s3.gra.io.cloud.ovh.net\/uploads\/2026\/05\/iconsport-366152-0149-1-1-6a02.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Iconsport \/ SPI\/Paul Terry<\/p>\n<p>However, Maddison took to Instagram on Monday night to suggest that the referees got the decision wrong, and that he was the one who touched the ball rather than Nmecha.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For clarity, the small tiny touch on the ball to change direction came from the outside of my right foot, not Nmecha,&#8221; Maddison said in a story, accompanied with a screenshot of the moment in question.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I told the ref that but the check was over in about 20 seconds. Officials are petrified to make decisions on pitch now because of VAR. We keep fighting.
