\n\t\u201cLord of the Rings<\/a>\u201d filmmaker Peter Jackson<\/a> doesn\u2019t \u201cdislike\u201d AI being used in film \u2014 but he thinks it\u2019s a shame that the debate surrounding it is partly why Andy Serkis<\/a> will never win awards for his motion-capture performance as Gollum.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking at a Cannes Film Festival<\/a> masterclass the day after he was bestowed an Honorary Palme d\u2019Or, Jackson said that though AI is \u201cgoing to destroy the world,\u201d when it comes to its use in film, \u201cI don\u2019t dislike it at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI mean, to me, it\u2019s just a special effect,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cIt\u2019s no different from other special effects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, he said that it\u2019s \u201cabsolutely critical\u201d to protect actors\u2019 rights from having their likenesses stolen and used in films without their permission. \u201cIf you\u2019re doing an AI duplicate of somebody, like Indiana Jones or anyone else, as long as you\u2019ve licensed the rights off the person who you\u2019re showing, I don\u2019t see the issue,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cIt\u2019s when people\u2019s likenesses get stolen and usurped.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut one downside to the current debate around AI in Hollywood is its impact on awards recognition for motion-capture performances, like Serkis\u2019 portrayal of Gollum in \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d films. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of the current environment, everyone\u2019s so worried about AI \u2026 I don\u2019t think a Gollum-type character or a generated character has any hope for winning any awards,\u201d he said. \u201cWhich is a bit unfair, especially in the Andy Serkis case where it\u2019s not an AI-generated performance, it\u2019s a human-generated performance 100% of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJackson also teased the upcoming \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum\u201d film, which Serkis is directing and starring in. Asked why Jackson decided to let Serkis take the helm, he said: \u201cThe film is about Gollum\u2019s psychological and addiction. I thought, \u2018Andy knows this guy better than anybody.\u2019 So I actually I didn\u2019t think much of me [directing the new movie]. I thought the most exciting version of this movie is if Andy Serkis makes it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJackson was presented his honorary Palme by \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d star Elijah Wood on Tuesday night during the festival\u2019s opening ceremony.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou showed the world something it had never seen before, and nothing was ever the same,\u201d Wood, who famously played Frodo Baggins in the trilogy, told his director, adding: \u201cHe helped build an entirely new filmmaking culture at the far edge of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his speech, Jackson recalled that the decision to shoot most of the three \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d films was a \u201chuge gamble,\u201d dubbed a \u201cfolly\u201d by the media that predicted the expensive might prove to be a disaster if the first movie wasn\u2019t a hit.
