\n\tEXCLUSIVE<\/strong>: Here\u2019s a first clip for Kantemir Balagov\u2019s anticipated English-language debut\u00a0Butterfly Jam, starring Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough, which is premiering in Cannes on Wednesday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, which is opening the Directors\u2019 Fortnight section at the festival, is set against the backdrop of New Jersey\u2019s Circassian community. The story revolves around a teenager (Talha Akdogan) whose father (Keoghan) and aunt (Keough) run a struggling diner specializing in Circassian cuisine. When he\u2019s not helping out in the restaurant, the boy is training to become a professional wrestler. After one of his father\u2019s misguided schemes goes wrong, he is forced to take on board his father\u2019s failings as he finds himself confronted with a violence that will force him to grow up faster than he would like.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking with Deadline in advance of the film\u2019s world premiere, both Keoghan and Keough admitted they had been fans of Balagov\u2019s Cannes prize-winner\u00a0Beanpole\u00a0and were keen to work with the director on his first English-language project.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI saw Kantemir\u2019s film\u00a0Beanpole\u00a0and I thought it was just really stunning, and I wanted to work with him,\u201d Keough said. \u201cAnd then I read the script and it was just such a specific kind of nuanced world and character that I\u2019ve never really seen anything like on screen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTo prepare for the role, Keough said she studied videos about traditional dances and Circassian culture to get a feel for her character, and she admitted that working with Keoghan \u201creminds me of myself as an actor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI really enjoyed the process,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have some similarities in our process and so I found it to be really fun\u2026 I think we\u2019re both quite free with the way we perform.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKeoghan, meanwhile, said that while he and Keough were filming their scenes together he \u201cnever knew where they would go because she\u2019s so unpredictable, in a good way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJust playing off of that energy and it being organic was a great experience to get to act alongside,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tButterfly Jam\u00a0is produced by Alexander Rodnyansky\u2019s AR Content, which is also financing, along with Emilia P\u00e9rez\u00a0producer Pascal Caucheteux\u2019s Why Not Productions and Goodfellas, which is handling international sales. UTA Independent Film Group is selling domestic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film is the first feature film to come out of Keoghan\u2019s production company Wolfcub, which the actor says is a \u201cmajor milestone for me and my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo not only be able to act but be a part of the creative conversations and provide input for the entire filming process is something I\u2019m looking forward to doing more with my production company and our future projects,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tPlot details about the movie have been largely kept under wraps until its Cannes bow today and when pressed about what hopes they have for audiences to take away from the debut, Keough said: \u201cIt\u2019s a heavy movie but I do think there\u2019s this really deep bond within the family despite the circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n
