The Old Mill \u2014 the 1816 adobe gristmill tucked behind a stand of oak trees on Old Mill Road in San Marino \u2014 opens its galleries Thursday evening to \u201cA Rite of Passage: The American Road Trip,\u201d the latest exhibition in the California Art Club\u2019s series marking California\u2019s 175th anniversary and the United States\u2019 250th. The opening reception runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
The exhibition gathers paintings from CAC artists that capture the textures, colors, and moods encountered along a cross-country drive \u2014 from desert highways to small-town main streets, from forgotten gas stations to roadside diners. It is the third installment in the club\u2019s Celebrating California\u2019s 175th series, which has already featured \u201cEchoes of Yosemite\u201d at Saint Mary\u2019s College Museum of Art and \u201cThe Golden State\u201d at the Old Mill itself.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the California Art Club\u2019s founding in 1909, we share a profound connection to the Golden State\u2019s artistic identity,\u201d Eire Hoke, exhibitions manager for the century-old organization, said in a January statement. \u201cOur artists have been documenting California\u2019s story for most of its history.\u201d<\/p>\n
The California Art Club, founded in 1909, is one of the nation\u2019s oldest plein air organizations, with roots in the California Impressionist movement. The Old Mill \u2014 known formally as El Molino Viejo \u2014 is a designated California Historical Landmark and was the first commercial gristmill in Southern California. The exhibition runs through October 4.<\/p>\n
