Citing four anonymous \u201cpeople familiar with the matter,\u201d the publication said that Amazon was exploring using Alexa as an operating system and developing the phone, codenamed Transformer, to push people to use Amazon\u2019s AI and other services. At the time, the sources said that Transformer could still be canceled, and Amazon declined to comment on the report to Ars Technica.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview published on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/99ab7093-d680-40ad-baa7-1c32302bb363\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a> (FT) today, Panos Panay, Amazon\u2019s head of devices and services, said building a new phone isn\u2019t Amazon\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n<p>The company already tried selling a smartphone in 2014, but it discontinued the <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2014\/07\/review-amazons-fire-phone-offers-new-gimmicks-old-platform-growing-pains\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fire Phone<\/a> about a year later following <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2014\/10\/23\/amazon-fire-phone-flops\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poor sales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>FT reporter Rafe Rosner-Uddin asked Panay, who was behind Microsoft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2023\/01\/rip-surface-duo-microsoft-reportedly-gives-up-on-the-weird-form-factor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failed Surface Duo phone<\/a>, whether Amazon is interested in releasing a new AI-focused phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s what I\u2019d say: it\u2019s just not the goal. I know there\u2019s a lot of rumors out there,\u201d Panay responded.<\/p>\n<p>Panay said Amazon is not \u201cnecessarily\u201d trying to create a new phone.<\/p>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s no clear path that makes sense\u2026 there\u2019s so many new form factors that are important that need to be focused on. It\u2019s a tricky question. If I black-and-white say no, I would say that was accurate. But I also think it\u2019s misleading.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s devices chief pointed to the importance of making \u201ca big bet when you need to,\u201d suggesting that currently, Amazon doesn\u2019t need to release a phone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In March, Reuters reported that Amazon was developing a new smartphone.
