She wants her 11-year-old to worry about \u201cschool, friends and sleepovers\u201d rather than \u201chospital wards, surgeries and dialysis machines\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For now, her family\u2019s life is structured around haemodialysis due to Alport syndrome, a rare genetic kidney condition carried by her husband Garry Davis and daughter Saoirse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Four days a week, McDonagh drives Saoirse 3\u00bd hours from their home in Co Clare to Dublin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-street-hospital\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-street-hospital\/\">Temple Street children\u2019s hospital<\/a> for dialysis. The treatment takes four hours, and then they drive home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Most days father and daughter hardly see each other, as Davis has to travel three times per week for dialysis in Limerick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBoth sick, both exhausted, both fighting the same illness,\u201d says McDonagh. \u201cThis is not living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Davis and Saoirse are both on the organ transplant list. Davis has had two kidney transplants: in 2004 and 2019. The first gave him 14 years with a good quality of life, he says, but the second was rejected by his body in a turn of events he describes as feeling like \u201csomeone hit me with a shovel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Successful organ transplants for them would bring about a \u201cnew normal\u201d of life without dialysis, says McDonagh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family attended an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-kidney-association\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-kidney-association\/\">Irish Kidney Association<\/a> event at Dublin\u2019s Mansion House on Wednesday, raising awareness of the importance of organ donation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The association is calling for \u201curgent action\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/12\/29\/plea-to-families-to-discuss-organ-donation-as-donors-and-transplant-numbers-fall\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/12\/29\/plea-to-families-to-discuss-organ-donation-as-donors-and-transplant-numbers-fall\/\">donations have fallen<\/a> to its lowest level in five years. There were 202 organ transplants conducted last year \u2013 a significant decline on the pre-pandemic yearly average of 282.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/01\/11\/average-of-almost-300-people-per-day-add-their-names-to-opt-out-organ-donation-register\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Almost 300 people per day on average are opting out of organ donation under new rulesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This is despite the Human Tissue Act of 2024, shifting organ donation to a scheme people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/01\/11\/average-of-almost-300-people-per-day-add-their-names-to-opt-out-organ-donation-register\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/01\/11\/average-of-almost-300-people-per-day-add-their-names-to-opt-out-organ-donation-register\/\">automatically opted into<\/a>, with those wanting to opt out having to expressly register that preference. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking at the event, HSE chief clinical officer  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colm-henry\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colm-henry\/\">Colm Henry<\/a> says Ireland does not compare well with other countries when it comes to organ donation. Transplant rates have fallen, particularly since the pandemic, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A double lung transplant came at the 11th hour for Irene McGrath (54) from Clasheen, Co Cork, who had been receiving palliative care after suffering for about a decade with a rare autoimmune disease called scleroderma, which caused scarring to her lungs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Diagnosed in her late 30s, she says the condition got progressively worse to the point she could not breathe on her own; she  required full-time oxygen therapy for 3\u00bd years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn the end I couldn\u2019t get out of bed and couldn\u2019t even turn in the bed without losing my breath. It was transplant or die &#8230; I was literally being sent home, it was palliative care because my condition had gotten so bad, but they found a match and I was saved,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Double lung transplant recipient Irene McGrath from Glasheen in Cork. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Standing in the sunshine outside the Mansion House on Wednesday, McGrath looks a picture of health and says she feels \u201cblessed\u201d and \u201cgrateful\u201d for the lungs she received five years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was a gift to me &#8230; I\u2019m back to work, back to the gym, back on holidays, back playing sports. Everything is great. Life is great,\u201d she says, adding that she hopes people will talk to their family members about organ donation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jayne McHugh (37), from Co Galway, carried a donor card and made her wishes clear to her family from the age of 16. She died two years ago after suffering an unexpected brain haemorrhage. By donating her organs, she changed four people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t our decision to make,\u201d says her mother, Mary McHugh. \u201cJayne had already made it. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The eldest of five siblings, Jayne McHugh was \u201cenergetic\u201d and \u201ckind\u201d, with a \u201cgreat sense of humour\u201d and a love of animals, says her sister Aoife Kenny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are \u201ctwo sides\u201d to organ transplants, Kenny says: \u201cIt is going to be somebody\u2019s worst day and somebody\u2019s best day.
