{"id":483691,"date":"2026-05-14T04:03:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T04:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/483691\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T04:03:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T04:03:26","slug":"cartels-likely-to-see-remote-corners-of-ireland-as-access-route-to-europe-says-senior-garda-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/483691\/","title":{"rendered":"Cartels likely to see remote corners of Ireland as access route to Europe, says senior garda \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A clampdown on cocaine smuggling through large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belgium\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belgium\">Belgian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/netherlands\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/netherlands\/\">Dutch<\/a> ports is likely to lead drug gangs to seek alternative routes into Europe including landing large consignments off the southwest coast of Ireland, a senior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\">garda<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Assistant Garda Commissioner Eileen Foster said it was only reasonable to assume that South American cartels would consider that option given the increased security at ports including Rotterdam and Antwerp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe natural progression for cocaine smugglers, given greater security in some large European ports, would be to look at alternative routes \u2013 we don\u2019t have any intelligence on specific plans to look at Ireland but obviously we have to be mindful given our strategic position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Foster pointed out that, given the main transatlantic shipping route passes off the southwest coast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\">Cork<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\">Kerry<\/a> were strategically located as one of the first European landfalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She noted some of the successes of garda\u00ed, customs and the Naval Service over the last 30 years in foiling smuggling operations off the southwest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have some large cocaine seizures here since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/captain-gets-17-years-for-possession-of-48m-cocaine-1.47794\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/captain-gets-17-years-for-possession-of-48m-cocaine-1.47794\">Sea Mist<\/a> [ship in 1996] \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/third-consignment-of-cocaine-on-boat-brings-total-found-to-102m-1.190444\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/third-consignment-of-cocaine-on-boat-brings-total-found-to-102m-1.190444\">Gemeos<\/a> in Kinsale; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/crime-and-law\/prison-escapee-jailed-over-440m-drug-haul-caught-in-spain-1.1576905\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/crime-and-law\/prison-escapee-jailed-over-440m-drug-haul-caught-in-spain-1.1576905\">Lucky Day<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/three-jailed-for-10-years-over-drug-smuggling-1.761199\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/three-jailed-for-10-years-over-drug-smuggling-1.761199\">Dances with Waves<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/ireland\/irish-news\/briton-caught-on-yacht-with-300m-worth-of-cocaine-dies-in-prison-1.3295494\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/ireland\/irish-news\/briton-caught-on-yacht-with-300m-worth-of-cocaine-dies-in-prison-1.3295494\">Makayabella<\/a> off the west Cork coast. Plus of course we\u2019ve had big cannabis seizures like the Karma and the Posidonia and the Brime off Kerry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Foster was speaking after an event publicising the Garda Coastal Watch in Castletownbere in west Cork on Wednesday. Map: Paul Scott <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to one garda source, increased investment by law enforcement agencies at Antwerp, which handles over 13 million shipping containers annually, and Rotterdam which handles over 14 million, has forced cartels to look at alternative smuggling routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A member of the Rotterdam Port Police said trying to stop cocaine in container traffic can be like \u201clooking for a needle in a haystack\u201d but there had been considerable success over the last five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2021, 71 tonnes of cocaine were seized in Rotterdam and 116 tonnes were seized in Antwerp in 2023. Over the past two years Rotterdam reported a 40 per cent drop in such seizures, and Antwerp a 60 per cent drop, as the cartels sought alternative approaches in response.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier this year, Europol warned that cocaine production had reached unprecedented levels in Latin American, supplying substantial quantities to the European Union where there has been \u201cno signs of stagnation\u201d in demand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCriminal networks are finding new&#8230; transportation methods, concealment techniques and trafficking routes,\u201d Europol said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chief supt Vincent O\u2019Sullivan, who has responsibility for almost 1,200km of coastline around Co Cork, said those with local knowledge have a vital role to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCork county has become of the most strategically significant locations in Ireland in the fight against international drug trafficking due to its extensive coastline, deep water harbours and direct access to Atlantic shipping routes linking Europe with South America and West Africa,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn recent years some of the largest drugs seizures in Irish history have been detected off the Cork coastline including the interception of the MV Matthew where over 2.2 tonnes of cocaine valued at \u20ac157 million was seized in a large international operation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Sullivan urged people to be vigilant and said very often what might seem innocuous can prove critical.
