Asbestos-containing material has been found in some of the debris after a fire tore through the old Jute Factory at Tycor business centre in Co Waterford last weekend.<\/a><\/p>\n

Waterford City and County Council had said specialist contractors were continuing clean-up operations at the site of the fire, which broke out on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said materials containing asbestos identified in the area had been removed from surrounding roads and footpaths, and that air quality monitoring was continuing.<\/p>\n

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre that was used extensively for building insulation before the 1990s, but it is now known that exposure to asbestos can have health implications. It is no longer used but can still be found in older buildings.<\/p>\n

Asbestos-containing materials do not cause health problems unless they are disturbed and the asbestos fibres are released into the air. Breathing in the fibres can increase the risk of serious health effects usually associated with repeated or higher levels of exposure.<\/p>\n

In order to reduce the chances of exposure to asbestos, the Health Service Executive (HSE) said it is important that any dust or debris that could contain asbestos fibres is not released into the air.<\/p>\n

People living within the vicinity of Tycor Business Centre are advised not to bring debris, dust or ash into their homes on footwear or clothing, or to sweep or brush dust.<\/p>\n

They are also advised to remove and clean their shoes before going inside, and to wash their hands thoroughly after any outdoor activities.<\/p>\n

The HSE has advised people not to vacuum, power hose, mow grass or vigorously clean surfaces that could be contaminated.<\/p>\n

Anyone concerned about their health is advised to contact their GP.<\/p>\n

Up to 40 premises as well as community groups and social enterprises lost their units in last weekend’s fire, impacting hundreds of people.<\/p>\n

The company that owns the Tycor Business Centre said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.<\/a><\/p>\n

It comes as the Government and local council are now in the process of drawing up a support scheme for those impacted.<\/p>\n
