There was no shortage of \u201csharp-eyed\u201d critics eager to chime in.<\/p>\n<p> It all started after X user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SHL0MS\/status\/2054280631807316329\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">@SHL0MS posted the painting<\/a> and wrote: \u201cI just generated an image in the style of a Monet painting using AI. Please describe, in as much detail as possible, what makes this inferior to a real Monet painting.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/screen1.jpg\" alt=\"A tweet shows an AI-generated image in the style of a Monet water lily painting, featuring lily pads and flowers on water with green foliage. The tweet asks how this image is inferior to a real Monet painting.\" width=\"619\" height=\"696\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-854651\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The user even marked the post with X\u2019s \u201cMade with AI\u201d label to add to the deception. <\/p>\n<p>In reality, the painting is one of the 250 oil paintings in the renowned French Impressionist painter Claude Monet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Water_Lilies_(Monet_series)\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Water Lilies series<\/a> in which he depicted scenes from his home flower garden over the final 31 years of his life.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/monet-piece-800x593.jpg\" alt=\"Impressionist painting of a pond with lily pads and blooming pink and white water lilies; reflections of sky and foliage create a serene, colorful atmosphere.\" width=\"800\" height=\"593\" class=\"size-large wp-image-854718\"  \/>The painting is one of the 250 or so paintings in the famous \u201cWater Lilies\u201d series by French painter Claude Monet. <\/p>\n<p>Critics, however, were eager to point out all kinds of \u201cobvious\u201d details that show why the \u201cAI\u201d Monet can\u2019t hold a candle to a genuine Monet. One person even took the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/co1born\/status\/2054312987872358539\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">write out an 850-word breakdown<\/a> of the AI work\u2019s shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/reply1-800x241.jpg\" alt=\"A tweet by @egg_oni critiques an artwork, stating it lacks cohesion in depth and color, has poor reflection details, and the lilypad-algae background is as vague as typical AI art.\" width=\"800\" height=\"241\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-854667\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m disappointed I have to even point it out,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/egg_oni\/status\/2054297725471166691\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">writes @egg_oni<\/a>. \u201cThere is no cohesion to the depth and color choices. The reflection of the tree bleeds into the lilypads with no regard for spatial depth or contrast. The left image has a smooth, curving line; the right image has jagged, crisscrossing lines, illustrating different eye movement patterns.\" width=\"800\" height=\"685\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-854699\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI present you with my eye lines, thickness denotes how quickly my eye moved,\u201d writes @KEMOS4BE in a since deleted post, which included helpful illustrations. \u201cOne has a sensible, meandering composition that fits the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SHL0MS\/status\/2054280631807316329\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">the post<\/a> began to go viral, many of the insightful critics began deleting their replies, but thankfully @SHL0MS and other <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Jediwolf\/status\/2054776716770320631\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">users such as @Jediwolf<\/a> took screenshots of some of the best replies before they disappeared.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/reply-screenshots.jpg\" alt=\"A series of tweets from multiple users responding to a thread discussing the design differences between US and European homes, focusing on color palettes, textures, and how Americans and Europeans decorate living spaces.\" width=\"800\" height=\"5321\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-854705\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dioscuri\/status\/2054838691646824461?s=46&amp;t=qBH6cOT2t82E4gdxpm7Fbg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">People<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/c_valenzuelab\/status\/2054900326243934246?s=46&amp;t=qBH6cOT2t82E4gdxpm7Fbg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">pointing out<\/a> that results of this silly experiment are in line with what studies have shown about how people perceive art differently in light of how it was produced. The famous 2004 Kruger study into something called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Effort_heuristic\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">effort heuristic<\/a> found that people liked and valued artworks more if they believe they took more time and effort to create.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a natural human bias against AI. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-54294-4\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">2024 study published in Nature<\/a> found that while people generally prefer AI-generated artworks over human-made ones when they didn\u2019t know they were AI-generated, they preferred AI art less after finding out that AI was behind it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipants were unable to consistently distinguish between human and AI-created images,\u201d write researchers Simone Grassini and Mika Koivisto in the article titled \u201cUnderstanding how personality traits, experiences, and attitudes shape negative bias toward AI-generated artworks\u201d. \u201cFurthermore, despite generally preferring the AI-generated artworks over human-made ones, the participants displayed a negative bias against AI-generated artworks when subjective perception of source attribution was considered, thus rating as less preferable the artworks perceived more as AI-generated, independently on their true source.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings hold potential value for comprehending the acceptability of products generated by AI technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It would be interesting for someone to now conduct the same experiment with photographs, perhaps with an obscure photo by Ansel Adams, for example.
