\n\tAfter publicly supporting Donald Trump<\/a> and the Republican Party in recent months, Nicki Minaj<\/a> is opening up about why she became vocal in her support for the President.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an interview with Time<\/a>, Minaj says a major reason that she was turned off to Democrats was that after her home was \u201cswatted\u201d several times after trolls would call the police and trigger outsized responses, she requested time to sit down with Governor Gavin Newsom, who allegedly didn\u2019t reply.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2025, Republican congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna offered assistance to Minaj, and it solidified the interest she had in the Republican party. She even considered taking her support public.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was shocked,\u201d Minaj says of the response to her swatting. \u201cI\u2019d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way. That\u2019s what made me say that I don\u2019t care to keep this a secret anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMinaj says she initially declined to speak out as she didn\u2019t want to split her fanbase.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI felt that way already about him, just that I didn\u2019t dare act like that publicly,\u201d Minaj says. \u201cIt\u2019s been ingrained in everyone\u2019s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family. I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMinaj also says rap rival Jay-Z<\/a> was involved in her ideological shifts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not,\u201d she says. \u201cLots of rappers don\u2019t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJay-Z and President Obama have shown a public-facing friendship through the years, from Obama inducting<\/a> Jay-Z into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 to Jay-Z campaigning<\/a> for Obama.<\/p>\n

\n\tMinaj also says that a 2024 speech<\/a> Obama gave supporting Kamala Harris, which encouraged Black men to vote for a woman president, pushed her further away from the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n
