Roughly one year after breaking ground<\/a>, the expansion of The Broad<\/a> officially hit its topping-out milestone yesterday as the project\u2019s final steel beam was hoisted into place in Downtown Los Angeles<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro<\/a> and built by MATT Construction \u2014 the same team behind the original museum \u2014 the 50,000-square-foot addition is on track to open in 2028, just ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before the beam was lifted, museum leaders and civic figures gathered to sign it in a ceremony that felt equal parts construction ritual and LA cultural event.<\/p>\n

The project will expand the museum\u2019s gallery space by roughly 70 percent, a response to both the institution’s lasting popularity and the rapid growth of its collection since opening in 2015.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond more room for art, the addition promises a few architecturally intriguing moments: Visitors will be able to wander through visible painting storage racks, new outdoor courtyards will puncture the building with open-air spaces, and a dedicated event venue will support the museum\u2019s public programming.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lamar Johnson Collaborative<\/a> is serving as the Executive Architect on the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n
