\n\tOne week ahead of the final episode of The Late Show<\/a>, David Letterman<\/a> joined Stephen Colbert<\/a> to commend the end of the late night series. <\/p>\n

\n\tTo really commemorate the occasion, the two hosts made their way to the top of the Ed Sullivan Theater where they threw off a few pieces of set furniture onto none other than CBS<\/a>\u2018 eyemark logo. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI thought maybe tonight\u2019s occasion would be a little sad, being the end of your run here, but this brings true joy to my heart,\u201d Letterman said. \u201cWe are up here for the wanton destruction of CBS property.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a true story. When I first got this gig, one of the first things they told me before we even moved into the offices is that I would not be allowed to throw anything off of the roof of the Ed Sullivan building, because evidently there was a problem with a previous tenant,\u201d Colbert added. \u201cI never did it, but we\u2019re at the end here, so all bets are off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter they threw off the two chairs used to seat Late Show guests and Colbert\u2019s own desk seat, they took turn launching watermelons and a cake from the top of the building. And at the end of the segment, Letterman shared parting words for the network: \u201cI\u2019d like to say to the audience before we go, well, not necessarily to the audience, but to the folks at CBS: In the words of the great Ed Murrow, good night and good luck motherfucker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier, before they made their way to the roof, Sullivan complimented the Late Show\u2018s set furniture, and made sure to confirm the pieces were owned by CBS. \u201cThis is nice. It\u2019d be ashamed if something happened to this,\u201d he said, before a pool of people joined them on-stage to remove the furniture. <\/p>\n

\n\tLetterman\u2019s Thursday night appearance was a special one, particularly because he was the original host of The Late Show, leading the series from 1993 to 2015, when Colbert became his successor. His feature on the late night series, too, came after he recently slammed<\/a> CBS executives as \u201clying weasels\u201d when discussing the decision to cancel the program.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe was dumped because the people selling the network to Skydance said, \u2018Oh no, there\u2019s not going to be any trouble with that guy. We\u2019re going to take care of the show. We\u2019re just going to throw that into the deal. When will the ink on the check dry,\u2019\u201d Letterman told the New York Times. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen CBS announced<\/a>\u00a0The Late Show\u00a0was ending last year, the network said it was \u201cpurely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.\u00a0It is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the episode, Letterman joked that while he was backstage on Thursday night, that he ran into someone from CBS, \u201cand then he fired me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI will say, and I have every right to be pissed off, so I\u2019ll pissed off here a little bit, because this theater, you folks wouldn\u2019t be in this theater if it weren\u2019t for me, and Stephen wouldn\u2019t be here if it weren\u2019t for me, and we rebuilt this theater, and then Stephen came in and look at this, it\u2019s like the Bellagio,\u201d the former Late Show host said. \u201cAs we all understand, you can take a man\u2019s show, you can\u2019t take a man\u2019s voice, so that\u2019s the good news in this.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tColbert\u00a0appeared on the cover of\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s\u00a0New York issue<\/a>, where he reflected on his Late Show tenure and noted that he \u201cdid not expect it to end this way.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tLetterman\u2019s appearance on the late night series, as noted, arrived exactly one week before Colbert\u2019s final show on May 21.
