{"id":485646,"date":"2026-05-15T07:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/485646\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T07:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:50:09","slug":"the-childminder-exodus-i-love-it-leaving-was-not-an-easy-decision-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/485646\/","title":{"rendered":"The childminder exodus: \u2018I love it &#8230; Leaving was not an easy decision\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/childcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/childcare\/\">childminder<\/a> has said she is \u201cdevastated\u201d to leave her role but has decided to do so due to the introduction of new regulations for the sector over recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Leigh Ann Gilmore (54), from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lucan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lucan\/\">Lucan<\/a>, west <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> said she will finish up as a childminder at the end of June and plans to take on a part-time office administration job. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childminding.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.childminding.ie\/\">Childminding Ireland<\/a>, which provides guidance and support to childminders, has warned of a \u201cmass exodus\u201d from the sector unless significant changes are made to the \u201cnew child-minding system and the wider direction of policy\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The organisation said childminders are worried about the loss of flexibility, excessive paperwork, complex administrative requirements and restrictions around emergency cover under the new regulations, which they feel \u201cdo not properly reflect the realities of working alone from a family home\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the regulations introduced by the Department of Children in 2024, childminders must register with Tusla by September 2027. Childminders must also attend and complete a preregistration training course and an assessment by a Tusla inspector will take place at their home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2026\/01\/10\/unclear-if-childminders-homes-will-be-assessed-for-commercial-rates-says-national-body\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Unclear if childminders\u2019 homes will be assessed for commercial rates, says national bodyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gilmore, who has been working as a childminder from her home for 18 years, said exiting the job early was \u201cnever the plan\u201d and she would have stayed had it not been for the new rules. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe decision to do what I\u2019m doing came at great personal upset,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was not an easy decision to make &#8230; I basically planned to childmind until I could no longer sit on the floor and build Lego or go to the park and run around. Literally it would have been my body telling me it was time to retire and nothing else. That was always the plan because I love it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gilmore said she examined the regulations and had a series of concerns, primarily that once she was registered with Tusla her home address would be published by the agency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat I have done for 18 years \u2013 being Garda vetted, first-aid trained, insured, notified to Revenue \u2013 all of that was no longer good enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI didn\u2019t mind adding on a few extra things to satisfy safeguarding or whatever they felt needed to be extra, but it wasn\u2019t just a few extra things; it was a complete overhaul.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gilmore added she was not against regulation \u201cat all\u201d but that the rules had to be \u201cproportionate\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another childminder, who has been working in the north Kerry area since 2013, also said she was not willing to register. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe new regulations are not making it very feasible for childminders or very appealing,\u201d  Tina, who did not wish to give her surname, said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing in it really for us at the moment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is close up. I do love working in childcare but, at the moment, they\u2019re just not making it very appealing at all for childminders. If there is, you\u2019re talking extra paperwork to allocate for that,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s just becoming too institutionalised, really, for a home setting.
