Amid Hollywood contraction, old-school network jobs are suddenly sought after \u2014 or at least increasingly viewed as a steadier paycheck for Hollywood\u2019s shrinking creative class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people who used to say to me, \u2018I\u2019m never doing a<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/04\/17\/entertainment\/christopher-meloni-tears-up-over-law-and-order-spinoff-cancellation-in-emotional-video-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Law &amp; Order <\/a>show, I\u2019m never doing that,\u2019 are now like, \u2018I\u2019m trying to provide for my family. I\u2019ve got two kids and I need to make sure I can put food on the table and still pay for this house,\u2019\u201d one top TV agent tells P6H.<\/p>\n<p>Despite lacking coolness, broadcast jobs offer a level of stability streaming often cannot. \u201cYou\u2019re not winning awards or getting nominated for anything if you\u2019re doing a network show, but it pays the bills,\u201d the agent said. \u201cAs much as it\u2019s a dying medium, people still want to work there because you can have a consistent style of living and know what your life is like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.66666667;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"8933816\" width=\"393\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/greg-mottola-attends-peacocks-miniature-127690121.jpg\" alt=\"Greg Mottola attends Peacock's &quot;The Miniature Wife&quot; Premiere.\" class=\"wp-image-8933816\"  \/>Greg Mottola directed the pilot for NBC\u2019s reboot of \u201cThe Rockford Files.\u201d Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>NBC\u2019s reboot of \u201cThe Rockford Files\u201d\u00a0is from\u00a0<strong>Mike Daniels<\/strong>, who most recently was a co-showrunner of Peacock\u2019s short-lived \u201cPonies.\u201d His last network TV gig was in 2019 with the\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Smits\u00a0<\/strong>legal drama \u201cBluff City Law\u201d (also on NBC).\u00a0<strong>Greg Mottola<\/strong>\u00a0is directing and producing the pilot \u2014 his most recent TV credits include a pair of high-profile streaming series, \u201cPeacemaker\u201d and \u201cNobody Wants This\u201d \u2014 in his first network TV gig since he helmed the first three episodes of \u201cArrested Development.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allegra Edwards<\/strong>\u00a0is co-starring in CBS\u2019 vampire comedy \u201cEternally Yours,\u201d following five-seasons on Amazon\u2019s \u201cUpload.\u201d One of the bigger hits this past season, Fox\u2019s \u201cBest Medicine,\u201d featured\u00a0<strong>Josh Charles\u00a0<\/strong>in his first network TV starring role since \u201cThe Good Wife.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"8930595\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/livvy-dunne-jessica-belkin-hassie-127503405.jpg\" alt=\"Livvy Dunne, Jessica Belkin, Hassie Harrison, Shay Mitchell, and Brooks Nader at the 2026 Fox Upfronts.\" class=\"wp-image-8930595\"  \/>\u201cBaywatch\u201d cast members Livvy Dunne, Jessica Belkin, Hassie Harrison, Shay Mitchell and Brooks Nader attend the 2026 Fox Upfronts at New York City Center on May 11, 2026 in New York City. WireImage<\/p>\n<p>For younger actors, streaming still offers something broadcast largely does not: lead roles. \u201cThere\u2019s no leads on network television shows for a 25-year-old girl,\u201d the agent added. \u201cBut on streaming, you can be the lead of a show making a really good living at 20 or 25 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest frustrations in streaming remains the long gaps between seasons. \u201cYou can shoot eight to 10 episodes in one year \u2014 after already waiting six months just to get to set \u2014 and then have 18 months between seasons,\u201d the agent said. \u201cSo in three years, you\u2019re shooting 16 episodes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For writers hoping to run their own shows, broadcast offers a stronger training ground, according to another TV lit agent. \u201cYou\u2019re getting to produce earlier and you\u2019re involved in production while you\u2019re writing,\u201d the agent said.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another agent argued clients can no longer afford to be overly selective. \u201cBack when all the streamers were launching, it was an arms race for talent,\u201d the agent said. \u201cWe could negotiate huge deals and everyone was making money doing cool sh-t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even so, fears remain that the networks could abandon scripted programming altogether in favor of sports and news, and sports-rights costs are expected to further erode scripted budgets. A fourth TV agent summed it up bluntly: \u201cIt all comes from somewhere, right?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Like vinyl, broadcast TV may be en vogue again.
