{"id":486340,"date":"2026-05-15T17:09:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T17:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/486340\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T17:09:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T17:09:15","slug":"romes-borghese-gallery-could-be-expanding-but-not-everyone-is-happy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/486340\/","title":{"rendered":"Rome\u2019s Borghese Gallery Could Be Expanding \u2013 But Not Everyone Is Happy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While many of Europe\u2019s most popular museums and landmarks are capping visitor numbers, one art gallery in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/rome\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rome<\/a> is actually looking to increase\u00a0the number of visitors that come through its doors.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/rome\/museums\/galleria-borghese\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Borghese Gallery<\/a>, a seventeenth-century villa home to masterpieces of the Baroque era by Bernini, Caravaggio Raphael and Titian, and surrounded by gorgeous landscape gardens which are peppered with statues and ornate fountains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Right now, 180 visitors are allowed into the gallery at any one time, and the time slots are often booked out well in advance. Given Rome welcomed 22 million visitors in 2025, there\u2019s obviously a lot of competition for a ticket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/europe\/travel\/can-european-cities-recover-from-overtourism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Can popular European cities ever recover from overtourism?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"00547acc-a78b-0c99-0c47-2eb6cf318f9c\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778864955_36_image.webp\" alt=\"ROME, ITALY- Visitors rowing their boats in the lake of the Villa Borghese gardens, next to the 18th century &quot;Temple of Asclepius (Aesculapius).\" data-caption=\"Villa Borghese Gardens\" data-credit=\"Photograph: Shutterstock\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106191838\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPhotograph: ShutterstockVilla Borghese Gardens&#13;<\/p>\n<p>But that might not be the case soon, as the museum has proposed creating a new building adjacent to the villa in order to showcase more art and allow more people to visit within one window.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, several heritage groups have taken issue with the proposal, and Friends of Villa Borghese took to Facebook to describe the plans as an \u2018outrage\u2019, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/outcry-italy-over-plans-expand-romes-famed-borghese-gallery-2026-05-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Reuters<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tomaso Montanari, a professor and expert on Roman Baroque, said: \u2018The mere idea of injecting one cubic metre of concrete into the Borghese park &#8230; amounts to a resounding blasphemy against the nation\u2019s cultural heritage.\u2019 They don\u2019t sound too happy, do they?<\/p>\n<p>Even if the proposal goes ahead, construction work in the Borghese grounds is still a long way off, and so far, Rome City Council have merely launched preliminary research into the proposal\u2019s potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the body said they were keen to be involved to ensure all works are carried out with Villa Borghese\u2019s best interests considered.
