{"id":487027,"date":"2026-05-16T02:27:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T02:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487027\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T02:27:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T02:27:10","slug":"clinical-trial-assessing-mscs-in-mild-alzheimers-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487027\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Trial Assessing MSCs in Mild Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.med.miami.edu\/stem-cell-therapy-alzheimers-clinical-trial-miami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Original story from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (FL, USA).<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A new clinical trial is evaluating whether a single mesenchymal stem cell infusion can stabilize cognitive decline in patients with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"stk-block-text__text has-text-align-left\">A new investigator-initiated clinical trial at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is exploring whether a single infusion of mesenchymal stem cells can stabilize cognitive decline in patients with mild cognitive impairment or early\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"stk-block-text__text has-text-align-left\">The trial, led by\u00a0Barry Baumel,\u00a0an associate professor of\u00a0neurology\u00a0and director of\u00a0memory disorders clinical trials at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, builds on both emerging standard-of-care therapies and earlier stem cell research in which Baumel participated, including a published phase I clinical trial investigating Lomecel\u2011B, a mesenchymal stem cell\u2013based therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"stk-block-text__text has-text-align-left\">\u201cWhat I want to see, in this group that\u2019s being treated to slow their disease, is if we can stabilize so it stops getting worse,\u201d Baumel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"stk-block-text__text has-text-align-left\">The current study targets patients already receiving anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody therapies (Leqembi\u00a0or\u00a0Kisunla) that are widely used in early Alzheimer\u2019s disease. These drugs remove amyloid plaque and slow disease progression but do not halt or reverse it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"stk-block-text__text has-text-align-left\">\u201cWe have data that shows us how people do on these drugs,\u201d Baumel said. \u201cIt\u2019s like a ski slope. Over time, the slope changes. It\u2019s still a ski slope, but it\u2019s not as steep a ski slope, if you take the medications. You end up going down the hill slower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trial adds a one-time intravenous infusion of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) to see if they can further improve outcomes. Participants will be monitored longitudinally following the stem cell infusion, with outcomes focused on whether cognitive decline stabilizes or improves.<\/p>\n<p>The study intentionally delays the stem cell treatment until patients have already been on monoclonal antibody therapy for six months, minimizing confounding safety signals from overlapping treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Who qualifies for the Alzheimer\u2019s clinical trial?<\/p>\n<p>The trial focuses on individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible participants must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be between 55 and 90 years old<\/li>\n<li>Have a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer\u2019s disease or mild Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score between 20 and 26<\/li>\n<li>Retain sufficient cognitive capacity to provide consent independently<\/li>\n<li>Have a designated study partner to help assess daily functioning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How stem cells may reduce brain inflammation in Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/p>\n<p>The study is grounded in a growing understanding that Alzheimer\u2019s disease involves more than amyloid accumulation alone. Neuroinflammation is increasingly recognized as a key driver of disease progression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of brain inflammation in people with Alzheimer\u2019s disease,\u201d Baumel said. \u201cWe know removing the amyloid reduces inflammation, and that may be why it slows the progression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mesenchymal stem cells may offer a complementary approach because of their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. They can migrate to sites of injury, release anti-inflammatory molecules and promote tissue repair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStem cells are also very potent anti-inflammatories,\u201d Baumel said. \u201cSo that may add to the anti-inflammatory effect of removing the amyloid. Our theory is that adding another anti-inflammatory medication, a potent one like stem cells, can really be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This dual mechanism of reducing amyloid burden and modulating inflammation underpins the trial\u2019s hypothesis.<\/p>\n<p>Building on early clinical evidence for mesenchymal stem cells<\/p>\n<p>Baumel\u2019s current work is informed by a previously published phase I clinical trial, co-authored by him, that evaluated Lomecel-B in patients with mild Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>In that study, patients received a single, intravenous infusion of stem cells or placebo in a randomized, double-blind design. The trial\u2019s endpoint was safety, and that was successfully met, with no treatment-related serious adverse events.<\/p>\n<p>Exploratory findings suggested potential clinical benefit. Patients receiving lower-dose stem cell infusions showed improved or stabilized cognitive performance compared to placebo, along with favorable changes in biomarkers related to inflammation and vascular function.
