{"id":487313,"date":"2026-05-16T06:42:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T06:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487313\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T06:42:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T06:42:20","slug":"eurovision-2026-australia-through-to-grand-final-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487313\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurovision 2026: Australia through to grand final \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Standing before a glistening crescent moon and adorned in more than 7,000 Swarovski crystals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\/\">Australia<\/a>\u2019s 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurovision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurovision\/\">Eurovision<\/a> hopeful Delta Goodrem  delivered a powerful performance on the 70th anniversary of the global song contest \u2013 and became  the first Australian act to qualify for the grand final since 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Heading into the competition as an early favourite behind Eurovision heavy-hitters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\">Denmark<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/finland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/finland\/\">Finland<\/a>, Goodrem delivered a note-perfect rendition of her power-ballad entry, Eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The track is impressive if a little formulaic \u2013 and of the 35 countries competing, 15 are represented by solo women performers, so Goodrem needed to find a way to stand out in a crowded field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Only 35 countries are competing at Eurovision this year, the lowest number of entries since 2003. Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands all boycotted the 2026 competition, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a>\u2019s participation in Eurovision and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\">Israeli government\u2019s attacks<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite playing it a little safe, Goodrem\u2019s performance was precise and undeniable. After making a dramatic trek downstage and towards her piano \u2013 bedazzled in sparkling gold, of course \u2013 Goodrem performed a short but effective signature piano solo (although the camera was unexpectedly obstructed in this moment, making it difficult to see Goodrem actually play the instrument).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The performance then climaxed with a classic power-ballad key change and the 41-year-old singer was propelled into the air on a platform that rose from within the piano itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was wind, there was fire, there was Goodrem\u2019s remarkable upper-range \u2013 it was a refreshingly self-assured offering from Australia after a disappointing couple of years for the country in the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/05\/12\/israel-qualifies-for-eurovision-final-after-chants-of-stop-stop-the-genocide-during-song\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel through to Eurovision final after shouts of \u2018stop the genocide\u2019 during songOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, Armenia, Switzerland and Latvia were eliminated following a popular vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The competing countries in Saturday\u2019s grand final will be Albania, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Ukraine, and the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Australia\u2019s first appearance at Eurovision was in 2014, when Jessica Mauboy performed as an interval act during the competition\u2019s semi-finals.
