{"id":487673,"date":"2026-05-16T12:23:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T12:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487673\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T12:23:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T12:23:20","slug":"arcgency-and-mast-create-floating-public-space-in-copenhagen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487673\/","title":{"rendered":"Arcgency and MAST create floating public space in Copenhagen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Danish architecture studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/arcgency\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arcgency<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAST<\/a> have completed Bedding 1 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/copenhagen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Copenhagen<\/a>, a floating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/public-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">community space<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/guesthouses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">guesthouse<\/a> that is moored alongside the artificial island of Christiansholm.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the Arsenalgraven canal, Bedding 1 is the first of three planned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/floating-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">floating structures<\/a> that will be accompanied by piers and a floating garden, providing communal spaces alongside a development known locally as Papir\u00f8en or Paper Island.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327519 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/bedding-floating-community-space-arcgency-mast-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Floating structure by Arcgency and MAST\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Arcgency and MAST have created a floating community space and guesthouse in Copenhagen<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arcgency.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arcgency<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mast.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAST<\/a> designed the timber-framed structure to reference the timber slipways historically used to launch new ships from the Royal Danish Naval Shipyard, part of which was formerly located on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Reinforcing this connection with Copenhagen&#8217;s shipbuilding history, Bedding 1 was constructed by Krohns B\u00e5dbyggeri, the last active shipyard in central Copenhagen, using Douglas fir timber topped with an anodised zinc roof.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327523 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/bedding-floating-community-space-arcgency-mast-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of Bedding 1 \" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Its timber-framed structure references Copenhagen&#8217;s shipbuilding history<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bedding 1 was conceived as something that belongs to the water, physically and conceptually,&#8221; Arcgency founder Mads M\u00f8ller told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It redefines how urban waterfronts are used \u2013 transforming the canal from a passive edge into an inhabited, shared, and dynamic public space that connects residents, visitors, and nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Combining social functions with direct access to the harbour makes the water an active part of everyday life, rather than just a backdrop,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327522 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/bedding-floating-community-space-arcgency-mast-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Timber structure of floating community space by Arcgency and MAST\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A sheltered terrace wraps around the lower level<\/p>\n<p>Organised across two storeys totalling 230 square metres, the upper deck of Bedding 1 sits level with the quayside and contains a single flexible community space designed to host events and gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>A metal staircase leads from the quay down to the lower level, where two apartments provide space for guests of the island&#8217;s residents. These apartments open onto a covered timber terrace with space for mooring boats and launching kayaks.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/21\/float-house-houseboat-tiggcoll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/floating-home-tiggcoll_dezeen_2364_sq_1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Timber-clad corner of Float House by TiggColl\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> TiggColl&#8217;s modular Float House makes life on water more accessible\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overhead, a large roof shelters this timber terrace, and is topped with sheets of anodised zinc finished with a sharp edge to allow rainwater to flow directly into the canal.<\/p>\n<p>Angular timber supports frame the long sides of Bedding 1, behind which the cabin-like building has been pulled back for privacy and clad in planks of Douglas fir.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327532 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/bedding-floating-community-space-arcgency-mast-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of floating community space by Arcgency and MAST\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The structure provides a flexible community space for hosting events<\/p>\n<p>Inside, white walls and ceiling and pale timber carpentry create light, open spaces, with large windows offering views of the surrounding canal and island.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The material choices reinforce the building&#8217;s connection to traditional shipbuilding while ensuring it weathers naturally over time,&#8221; M\u00f8ller told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another key architectural moment is the large overhanging roof, which simultaneously protects the building, frames views, and creates a sense of privacy in a highly public setting,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2327535 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/bedding-floating-community-space-arcgency-mast-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Guesthouse interior in Copenhagen\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Two apartments are held on the structure&#8217;s lower level<\/p>\n<p>The Paper Island <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2016\/02\/12\/cobe-wins-contest-redevelop-copenhagen-christiansholm-island-masterplan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">masterplan has been developed by Cobe<\/a>.
