\n\tJames Franco<\/a> has joined the cast of \u201cJohn Rambo<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor \u2014\u00a0currently at the Cannes Film Festival<\/a> \u2014\u00a0has a small role as a villain in the film, Variety understands, joining Noah Centineo<\/a> as Rambo and the recently announced David Harbour as Rambo\u2019s commanding officer Major Trautman.<\/p>\n

\n\tBeing directed by Jalmari Helander (\u201cSisu\u201d), \u201cJohn Rambo\u201d is the origin story of the franchise and takes place before 1982\u2019s \u201cFirst Blood,\u201d the Sylvester Stallone movie that started the popular franchise.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJohn Rambo\u201d has now wrapped production in Thailand. Also appearing in the film are Yao (\u201cSinners\u201d), Jason Tobin (\u201cA Thousand Blows\u201d), Quincy Isaiah (\u201cWinning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty\u201d), Jefferson White (\u201cYellowstone\u201d) and Tayme Thapthimthong (\u201cThe White Lotus\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tNews of Franco joining the film comes just as the actor has been spotted out and about around Cannes, seen at the opening ceremony with longtime girlfriend Izabel Pakzad\u00a0and later in the week at the Chopard dinner and the party for \u201cClub Kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the gala dinner on the opening night, Franco spoke to Deadline\u2019s Baz Bamigboye and hinted that he\u2019d recently wrapped a role in an unnamed \u201cbig studio movie\u201d \u2014\u00a0his first blockbuster in close to a decade. He added that the film \u201cwon\u2019t be ready for this summer, but my guess is it will be end of this year or spring-summer 2027.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tFranco also said he had been focused on living a \u201cpositive life\u201d following a sexual misconduct scandal that erupted over allegations of abuse of power and inappropriate behavior towards aspiring actresses at his now-defunct acting school. Franco denied the allegations but acknowledged that the accusers had raised important issues.<\/p>\n

\n\tRory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote the screenplay for \u201cJohn Rambo,\u201d which is produced by Lionsgate, Millennium Media, Templeton Media and AGBO, and will be distributed by Lionsgate.<\/p>\n

\n\tProducers are Kevin King Templeton for Templeton Media, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger for Millennium Media, and Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco for AGBO. Executive producers include Anthony and Joe Russo, Trevor Short, and Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk for Bonfire Legend, alongside Stallone.
