{"id":487952,"date":"2026-05-16T16:23:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T16:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487952\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T16:23:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T16:23:16","slug":"celtic-are-champions-again-as-hearts-title-dream-is-shattered-late-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/487952\/","title":{"rendered":"Celtic are champions again as Hearts title dream is shattered late on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                    Celtic 3<br \/>\nHearts 1<\/p>\n<p>HEARTS WERE ON the end of last-day devastation as Martin O\u2019Neill\u2019s Celtic pipped the long-time leaders at the post to become champions of Scotland for the fifth season in succession following a dramatic climax to an enthralling William Hill Premiership campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Derek McInnes\u2019 Jambos \u2013 having been top all the way since late September \u2013 arrived at a partisan Celtic Park knowing they only needed a draw to claim the top-flight title for the first time since 1960.<\/p>\n<p>But the Edinburgh club\u2019s stunning bid for glory, which made headlines worldwide, ended in the cruellest fashion as Celtic eked out a 3-1 victory over their title rivals through late goals by Daizen Maeda and substitute Callum Osmand, with the second of those sparking a pitch invasion that led to the shattered Hearts players having to be escorted down the tunnel to safety.<\/p>\n<p>The dramatic triumph capped a sensational return to management for 74-year-old O\u2019Neill, who had an eight-game stint as interim boss following Brendan Rodgers\u2019 departure in October before stepping back into the breach in January in the wake of Wilfried Nancy\u2019s short, ill-fated reign.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778948596_296_.jpeg\"  alt=\"celtic-manager-martin-oneill-during-the-william-hill-premiership-match-at-celtic-park-glasgow-picture-date-saturday-may-16-2026\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Celtic boss Martin O&#8217;Neill.                    Alamy Stock Photo<\/p>\n<p>    Alamy Stock Photo\n<\/p>\n<p>After coming through a season of turbulence to secure a 56th top-flight title \u2013 taking them one ahead of city rivals Rangers \u2013 Celtic also booked themselves a Champions League play-off for next season.<\/p>\n<p>Second-placed Hearts will have to console themselves with entering the second qualifying round of the same tournament as they lick their wounds following a devastating end to a campaign in which they racked up a record points tally and came tantalisingly close to ending four decades of Old Firm dominance.<\/p>\n<p>The sense of bitterness is likely to linger long for supporters of the Tynecastle club after some highly-contentious refereeing decisions went against them last weekend and on Wednesday before they missed out on the title on the final day for the fourth time since 1959.<\/p>\n<p>After a run of six consecutive league wins for Celtic had kept their hopes alive into the last day, O\u2019Neill sent out the same team that started at Motherwell on Wednesday as he sought the final win he needed to overhaul the long-time leaders.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">\ud83c\udf40 Goal STANDS! <\/p>\n<p>After a VAR check for offside, Celtic take a late lead over Hearts through Daizen Maeda.
