{"id":488414,"date":"2026-05-16T23:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T23:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/488414\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T23:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T23:30:12","slug":"life-changing-results-from-university-college-cork-run-cancer-treatment-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/488414\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Life-changing\u2019 results from University College Cork run cancer treatment trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">Findings from a post-cancer treatment programme, Linking You to Support and Advice (LYSA), could transform care for early-stage breast and gynaecological cancer patients, according to the Irish Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The LYSA programme, funded by the Irish Cancer Society, was run by Cancer Research at University College Cork in care centres across Cork University Hospital (CUH) and University Hospital Galway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Designed with patients in mind, the dedicated nurse-led service is now up and running in CUH as a result of the LYSA trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">According to a spokesperson for the Irish Cancer Society, findings from the trial could transform post-treatment care for early-stage breast and gynaecological cancer patients, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">A cohort of 200 women participated in the LYSA trial and were evenly split into two groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">One half formed a control group, which received standard follow-up care, while the other 100 patients received the new digital LYSA model of care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">LYSA patients completed an online survey every two months which monitored specific symptoms. Based on their survey responses, participants were then offered virtual nurse or dietetic consultations with a view to helping patients manage their symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Life-changing<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Cork-based participant Elaine Walsh, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, said the LYSA trial has been \u201clife-changing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5082426_1_articleinlinemobile_Elaine_20Walsh_20in_20October_202020_20during_20treatment_1_.jpg\" alt=\"Elaine Walsh in October 2020 during treatment. \" title=\"Elaine Walsh in October 2020 during treatment. \" class=\"card-img\"\/>Elaine Walsh in October 2020 during treatment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt\u2019s scary after you finish treatment, you\u2019re kind of out on your own, but I knew that being part of the LYSA trial meant if I had any symptoms, I could raise them and they\u2019d help,\u201d said Ms Walsh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI had psoriasis all over my body, and I mentioned it to the LYSA nurse, and she got me a consultation with a dermatologist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m on an immuno-suppressant now and have no psoriasis, which is great for my confidence. The LYSA trial has shaped who I am today. It helped me with being able to stand on my own two feet again after going through cancer treatment.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt has been life-changing for me \u2014 the level of support and the speed with which my symptoms were addressed have been hugely helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The aim of the LYSA trial was to establish the feasibility of this model of post-treatment care and saw all pre-defined criteria met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Post-treatment care<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The first feasibility criterion was enrolment of 200 women, the second criterion was that more than 50% of women completed baseline and endpoint surveys, and 86.5% of participants achieved it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The final criterion was that more than half of participants would engage with a nurse or dietitian after a symptom trigger \u2014 84% engaged with a nurse and 72% with a dietitian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Professor Josephine Hegarty, co-principal investigator of the LYSA trial, said health programmes that use digital tools can make \u201ca real difference for people recovering from breast and gynaecological cancer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cBy combining easy-to-use technology with practical self-care support and direct access to nurses and dietitians, the LYSA programme helped women stay involved in their care, keep track of symptoms, and get personalised support when they needed it.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThis approach shows how digital care can empower patients, improve continuity of care, and support quality of life as patients manage the long-term physical and emotional effects of cancer treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Findings from a post-cancer treatment programme, Linking You to Support and Advice (LYSA), could transform care for early-stage&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":488415,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[78],"tags":[781,42863,18,135,19,17],"class_list":{"0":"post-488414","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health","8":"tag-cork-news","9":"tag-cork-health","10":"tag-eire","11":"tag-health","12":"tag-ie","13":"tag-ireland"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@ie\/116586862081296733","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/488414","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=488414"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/488414\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/488415"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=488414"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=488414"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=488414"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
