Ireland is the joint-most successful country in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest<\/a> \u2013 but it isn\u2019t taking part in the competition this year<\/a> or broadcasting it. <\/b><\/p>\n

Viewers tuning in to RT\u00c9 this Saturday night at 8pm will notice that the annual mid-May staple is absent from the listings. <\/p>\n

Earlier this week, it was announced that the Irish broadcaster will instead air a Eurovision-themed episode of Father Ted<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Ireland is one of five countries which refused to take part in the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest<\/a> in Vienna this year. <\/p>\n

Alongside Iceland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain, Ireland has refused to send an entry to the contest over Israel being allowed to compete. <\/p>\n

In September, RT\u00c9 said that its participation would be \u201cunconscionable\u201d given the \u201congoing and appalling loss of lives in Gaza\u201d if Israel were to be included in the lineup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They added that they were \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d by the \u201ctargeted killing of journalists in Gaza, and the denial of access to international journalists to the territory, and the plight of the remaining hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n

There have been calls for both the BBC and RT\u00c9 to withdraw from the contest<\/a> in recent years due to Israel\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n

Israel finished runner-up in the 2025 contest and received 10 points from the Irish televote<\/a>, although campaigners believe that the Irish vote share came following sponsored ads \u2013 with some social media posts alleging that people voted multiple times.<\/p>\n

In December, organising body the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that all broadcasters, including Israeli network KAN, would be allowed to compete after its members backed changes to the voting system to \u201creinforce trust, transparency and the neutrality of the event<\/a>\u201d. <\/p>\n

The changes included reducing the maximum votes per payment method from 20 to 10 and forbidding broadcasters or artists from \u201cdirectly engaging with or supporting campaigns by third parties – including governments or their agencies – that could distort the vote\u201d. <\/p>\n

Last week, on May 9, the EBU announced that it had \u201cissued a formal warning letter to KAN\u201d and that it will \u201ccontinue to monitor any promotional activities carefully and take appropriate action where needed\u201d. <\/p>\n

This comes after videos with an \u201con-screen instruction to vote ten times for Israel had been published and released\u201d by the artist competing for Israel. <\/p>\n

The EBU said that its promotion rules are \u201cprimarily directed at discouraging large scale funded third-party campaigns\u201d and that it was \u201csatisfied that this video did not form part of such a campaign\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, employing a direct call to action to vote ten times for one artist or song is also not in line with our rules nor the spirit of the competition,\u201d they added. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe scale of our vote means that such activity cannot affect the overall result and 50 % of all votes this year are supplied through professional juries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Broadcasts<\/p>\n

RT\u00c9\u2019s boycott of the competition over Israel\u2019s participation means that in addition to not sending an entry this year, it also decided against broadcasting the mid-week semi-finals and Saturday\u2019s grand final.<\/p>\n

It joins RTVE in Spain and RTVSLO in Slovenia in not showing the contest on its network.<\/p>\n

However, public broadcaster NPO in the Netherlands and R\u00daV in Iceland decided to broadcast the competition despite refusing to take part. <\/p>\n

Father Ted<\/p>\n

This week, it was confirmed that Ireland\u2019s national broadcaster will show an episode of comedy series Father Ted in place of the final of the 2026 Eurovision final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Saturday night, RT\u00c9 2 will air the Irish sitcom\u2019s Eurovision-themed episode A Song For Europe, where priests Ted and Dougal perform My Lovely Horse, as part of its boycott of the contest over Israel\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n
