While there are no signs yet of inflation expectations surging, he cautioned that it is still early days. \u201cThese things don\u2019t happen overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Demarco declined to say how many rate hikes might be needed. \u201cWe are committed to setting monetary policy to ensure that inflation stabilizes at 2 percent in the medium term. This could require one rate hike. Consequently, several policy doves, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/press\/inter\/date\/2026\/html\/ecb.in260511~3fa2df2fa9.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luis de Guindos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banque-france.fr\/en\/governors-interventions\/long-view-monetary-policy-three-clarifications-prompted-three-challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fran\u00e7ois Villeroy de Galhau<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philenews.com\/oikonomia\/kypros\/article\/1714258\/giannis-stournaras-ston-f-i-ellinikes-trapezes-tha-stirixoun-energa-tin-kipriaki-ikonomia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yannis Stournaras<\/a>, continue to call for restraint and for more data before assessing whether action on rates is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Several prominent economists, including Berenberg chief economist Holger Schmieding and EFG Bank chief economist Stefan Gerlach, argue the ECB should stay patient. \u201cThe Iran war and its fallout are hitting the economy hard,\u201d Schmieding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/finanzen\/geldpolitik-kein-grund-fuer-hoehere-leitzinsen-accg-200809018.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a> in an op-ed on Monday. \u201cWith growth weak and unemployment rising, workers are unlikely to be able to push through excessive wage demands.
