{"id":48931,"date":"2025-09-07T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T10:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/48931\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T10:00:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T10:00:09","slug":"first-saint-of-21st-century-who-died-aged-15-to-be-canonised-in-rome-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/48931\/","title":{"rendered":"First saint of 21st century, who died aged 15, to be canonised in Rome \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Carlo Acutis, the Catholic Church\u2019s first saint who lived in the 21st century, will be canonised in Rome on Sunday at a ceremony led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pope-leo-xiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pope-leo-xiv\/\">Pope Leo XIV<\/a> in St Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Known as \u201cGod\u2019s influencer\u201d, Carlo Acutis died of leukaemia in 2006 aged 15. He will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/09\/07\/breda-obrien-carlo-acutis-the-millennial-saint-couldnt-be-more-different-to-the-influencers-of-the-manosphere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/09\/07\/breda-obrien-carlo-acutis-the-millennial-saint-couldnt-be-more-different-to-the-influencers-of-the-manosphere\/\">Catholic church\u2019s first millennial saint<\/a>, following confirmation by the Vatican last year of a second miracle through his intercession, which was needed for his canonisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Born in London in 1991, before his family returned to Milan, the teenager was a computer prodigy who helped spread Catholic teaching online before his death. He was scheduled to be canonised last April but this was postponed following the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pope-francis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pope-francis\">Pope Francis<\/a> on April 21st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The second person to be canonised is Pier Giorgio Frassati who died of polio in 1925, aged 24. A student, in his young life he was dedicated to social justice issues and worked with organisations such as Catholic Action and St Vincent de Paul to help the poor in his native Turin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Looking towards the canonisations, Bishop Fintan Gavin, chair of the Catholic Bishops Council for Evangelisation, Catechetics and Pastoral Renewal, said the lives of both young men \u201csend a powerful message to young people in our parishes, schools, colleges and those entering the workplace \u2013 that true happiness is not only possible today, but is also deeply attractive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/09\/07\/breda-obrien-carlo-acutis-the-millennial-saint-couldnt-be-more-different-to-the-influencers-of-the-manosphere\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breda O&#8217;Brien: Carlo Acutis, the millennial saint, could not be more different to the influencers of the manosphereOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He continued that: \u201cCarlo, who called the Eucharist his \u2018highway to heaven\u2019, used his gifts in the digital world to share his love for Jesus. Pier Giorgio, known as \u2018the man of the Beatitudes,\u2019 lived his faith with joy, friendship, and a tireless commitment to the poor.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The canonisation Mass will be broadcast on RT\u00c9 One Television and on RT\u00c9 Radio 1 Extra,<b> <\/b>from 10.15am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Across Ireland, throughout Sunday, there will be special Masses to mark the canonisations. At St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral, Armagh, there will also be a \u201cprayer walk\u201d in the cathedral grounds at 10am, before Mass at 11am celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh Michael Router.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Dublin the canonisations will be livestreamed from 9am from the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on City Quay, followed by the celebration of Mass at 11am by Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin Paul Dempsey. Relics of Carlo Acutis will be present in the church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At St Eugene\u2019s Cathedral in Derry there is a specially commissioned wooden statue of Carlo Acutis as well as a relic his mother gave the diocese.
