This is your six week warning. Samsung first launched its texting app in 2009<\/a>. Now after 17 years, Messages starts to shut down on phones in July. It\u2019s time to act \u2014 but with users reporting missing texts, back-up your messages beforehand.<\/p>\n In its end of service<\/a> announcement, Samsung told users to \u201cupgrade to Google Messages as your default messaging app today to maintain a consistent messaging experience on Android.” And now there\u2019s plenty of online guidance as to the best ways to save your old messages (just in case) and transfer to Google Messages.<\/p>\n All change for Galaxy.<\/p>\n Future Publishing via Getty Images<\/p>\n \u201cBack up your messages,\u201d ZDNet<\/a> says. \u201cYour texts don\u2019t have to disappear when the app gets shut down.\u201d You can save all your content to an external SSD or Samsung Cloud or Google Drive. Google Drive is easiest, but pick whichever you prefer.<\/p>\n With that done, \u201ctransferring your conversations to Google Messages is super easy,\u201d Android Central<\/a> says, notwithstanding earlier reports that a delayed process was leaving users with lost texts and an agonising wait to see if they all reappeared.<\/p>\n \u201cOnce the indexing process finishes,\u201d Android Central says, \u201call your conversations should properly show up inside Google Messages. So if you don\u2019t see your messages being transferred over immediately, you should see them within 48 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n After backing up, ZDNet recommends users \u201cstart testing Google Messages, or alternative communication platforms, to see which one you\u2019d prefer before Samsung ultimately pulls the plug in July. Samsung has been clear that its own Messages app has no future. And this end of service is actually perfectly timed. There\u2019s another reason to change now.<\/p>\n This month, Apple and Google have finally unleashed end-to-end encrypted text messaging via RCS. This requires an updated iMessage<\/a> app on the iPhone end and an updated Google Messages<\/a> app on the Android end. Secure texting is a big deal, even if this is carrier-dependent and weighted to North America for now.
