The college added that any information, photographs or leads, \u201cno matter how tentative,\u201d would be welcomed by researchers trying to solve the mystery.<\/p>\n
College archivists believe that the original 17th-century statues were probably weathered and blackened by soot by the early 19th century, and perhaps considered too unsightly to be reinstalled on the chapel roof following renovation work.<\/p>\n
