{"id":492579,"date":"2026-05-19T15:37:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T15:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/492579\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T15:37:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T15:37:10","slug":"kerry-retailer-attached-made-in-ireland-labels-to-jumpers-made-in-pakistan-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/492579\/","title":{"rendered":"Kerry retailer attached \u2018Made in Ireland\u2019 labels to jumpers made in Pakistan \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A well-known <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\">Co Kerry<\/a> retailer has been convicted after admitting to attaching \u201cMade in Ireland\u201d labels to products actually produced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\/\">Pakistan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Quills Woollen Market pleaded guilty at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killarney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killarney\/\">Killarney<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/district-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/district-court\/\">District Court<\/a> to two counts of breaching consumer protection law following a prosecution by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\">Competition and Consumer Protection Commission<\/a> (CCPC). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge David Waters on Tuesday fined the retailer \u20ac500 and ordered it to pay \u20ac1,000 towards the CCPC\u2019s costs, noting that this was a \u201cdeliberate attempt to deceive buyers\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Quills operates several retail and gift stores across the southwest, selling Irish-themed clothing, homewares, gifts and jewellery primarily to international tourists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following consumer complaints to the CCPC helpline, officers from the commission carried out inspections in September and November 2024 to check compliance with consumer protection laws. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A cut care label on a jumper on sale in a Quills outlet. Photograph: CCPC <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During visits to Quills stores in Killarney and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kenmare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kenmare\/\">Kenmare<\/a>, the CCPC staff examined hooded sweatshirts with Quills-branded swing labels that said, \u201cMade in Ireland\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The officers identified instances where the original care labels showing the country of origin appeared to be tampered with, as well as examples that still had the original label showing the country of origin as Pakistan, not Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the Consumer Protection Act 2007, it is an offence for a trader to provide false or misleading information that could cause a consumer to make a transactional decision they would not otherwise make.
