{"id":494017,"date":"2026-05-20T11:28:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T11:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/494017\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T11:28:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T11:28:10","slug":"mother-who-captained-irish-boxing-team-stabbed-cousin-12-times-in-savage-knife-attack-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/494017\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother who captained Irish boxing team stabbed cousin 12 times in \u2018savage\u2019 knife attack \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">A young mother who represented Ireland in boxing stabbed a distant cousin 12 times, leaving her with \u201ccatastrophic injuries\u201d on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mullingar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mullingar\/\">Mullingar<\/a> street, a court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Mary Nevin (25) was remanded in custody on Tuesday evening pending sentencing for the unprovoked knife attack, which Judge Keenan Johnson branded as savage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Nevin, a mother of two who once captained an elite underage Irish boxing team, pleaded guilty at Mullingar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/criminal-courts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/criminal-courts\/\">Circuit Criminal Court<\/a> to causing serious harm to her second cousin, Mary-Kate Nevin (22), on May 3rd, 2024, near the accused\u2019s home on Austin Friars Street in the midlands town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">After viewing CCTV footage and photos of the injuries, the judge said the accused had caused catastrophic injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He also noted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/director-of-public-prosecutions\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/director-of-public-prosecutions\/\">Director of Public Prosecutions<\/a> urged a 10-15-year sentence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The judge strongly criticised violent feuding among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/travellers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/travellers\/\">Traveller<\/a> community, saying it had a wonderful culture to be proud of, but it was diminished and dragged into the gutter by this type of incident. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He added it was also an affront not only to their community but also to the citizenry of Mullingar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Det Garda Adrian O\u2019Reilly said Mary-Kate Nevin and her partner were planning a night out but intended to stop at her sister\u2019s first. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">As she walked along Austin Friars Street, the accused opened her door and repeatedly asked her to come inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The victim told garda\u00ed she barely knew the accused, having met her only once, and refused, saying she did not want any trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Nevin told the victim: \u201cI\u2019ll slit your f***ing throat, you ugly tramp,\u201d ran at her and hit her in the face, the court heard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The victim felt what she thought were pinches, and when she got away, she could see she was bleeding heavily. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">At that point, she noticed the accused walking back into her apartment holding a black-handled kitchen knife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">It emerged the victim had been stabbed 12 times on her shoulder and down her arms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The court heard how tensions flared up on social media between different sides of a row that stemmed from a \u20ac40 drug debt, which had nothing to do with the victim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">She underwent emergency surgery, plastic surgery, blood transfusions and has been left permanently injured. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The court heard she lost all mobility in her left arm and hand, meaning she cannot return to work as a hairdresser, which had been her lifelong goal. Daily tasks have become impossible to do on her own. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">She was learning to drive but had to stop because she could no longer control a car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">She described how the attack had \u201cstolen my future\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">She had never been in a fight and was unable to defend herself against the accused, who was a trained boxer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The victim also spoke out about having never brought trouble on herself with garda\u00ed or among the Travelling or settled community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The court heard she had to cope with PTSD, depression, nightmares and flashbacks and barely goes out. \u201cI\u2019m a quarter the person I was,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">It also emerged that she suffered intimidation afterwards and that Mary Nevin had laughed at her about it since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The accused, Mary Nevin, also gave evidence and said: \u201cI want to apologise from the bottom of my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">She offered \u20ac5,000 as a token of remorse to her younger cousin, which was declined.
