Photograph: AuBC via AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So obviously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> felt a really big gesture was required. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And speaking of unusual gifts, here\u2019s the one which keeps on giving &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">What is it with the management in Montrose?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It\u2019s like the world cliff diving championships out there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\">RT\u00c9<\/a> plunged into crisis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Yet again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If crisis were a sea, the national broadcaster would never be out of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There\u2019s always something bobbing about to keep it in the news between financial scandals: unpopular new jingles, falling ratings, slumping licence fee sales, dodgy boxes, the threat from streaming and social media platforms, hordes dispatched overseas to cover one football match, more outsourcing and dispirited staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest payments controversy involving an RT\u00c9 top earning presenter concerns nature loving wildlife broadcaster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/derek-mooney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/derek-mooney\/\">Derek Mooney<\/a>, a presenter whose generous salary was concealed for a number of years because he had been classified by management as a producer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From the flip-flops, barter accounts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryan-tubridy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryan-tubridy\">Ryan Tubridy<\/a> uproar  three years ago to today\u2019s flora and fauna fiasco with  Mooney, the latest revelation about the organisation\u2019s unorthodox accounting methods when it comes to star players has cast it into the full glare of the political spotlight again. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RT\u00c9\u2019s embarrassments are box office. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Which is why Sinn F\u00e9in leader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\">Mary Lou McDonald<\/a>, headed straight for Donnybrook and the latest difficulties as her topic of choice for Leaders\u2019 Questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, two D\u00e1il committees are attacking their grills with wire brushes in anticipation of a return from some executive prime cuts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Media Committee are first out on Wednesday at lunchtime when director general Kevin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kevin-bakhurst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kevin-bakhurst\/\">Bakhurst<\/a> and his deputy Adrian Lynch will be joined by a number of officials from the Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-o-donovan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-o-donovan\">Patrick O\u2019Donovan<\/a> to discuss RT\u00c9 funding, pensions and \u201cother matters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Minister for Communications Patrick O'Donovan speaks to the media in Dublin on Tuesday. Photograph: Brian Lawless\/PA Wire <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a press release teeing up the meeting, chairman Alan Kelly said the committee welcomes this \u201ctimely engagement\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, not to be outdone, the heavyweight Public Accounts Committee is waiting in the wings for its chance at the hot coals. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It won\u2019t happen on Thursday as the meeting is about climate related spending, but members are expected to expand on its correspondence with RT\u00c9 over the sending of 41 staff to the Czech Republic to cover Ireland\u2019s World Cup qualifying game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The committee is unlikely to leave it at that and will be keeping a close eye on developments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Back to Tuesday, when the approach taken by Government to the revelations over Mooney\u2019s salary arrangements in this evolving story took an interesting turn away from the treatment of star performers and focused on the majority of staff who labour away without the star designation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McDonald took a familiar tack, citing the Mooney payment classification as proof that the Government has \u201cfailed to take on the culture of arrogance and privilege\u201d of the \u201ctop brass\u201d in RT\u00c9 while ordinary working people have their backs to the wall trying to make ends meet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cStrangely, in 2020, Mr Mooney\u2019s role was reclassified as a producer rather than a presenter, although the dogs in the street know that Derek Mooney is a presenter\u201d she pointed out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">End this management attitude that \u201cthe rules don\u2019t apply to them\u201d and sort out the situation, she told the Taoiseach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo the Government must now run RT\u00c9, apparently. Is that  your latest assertion?\u201d retorted Miche\u00e1l Martin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He believed the current management is trying to get to grips with the situation now. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/19\/number-of-rte-workers-earning-more-than-100000-increased-more-than-a-third-in-past-five-years\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Number of RT\u00c9 workers earning more than \u20ac100,000 increased more than a third in past five yearsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As for the Sinn F\u00e9in leader saying the dogs in the street knew Mooney\u2019s real job description, the Taoiseach remarked \u201cI\u2019d say the dogs in the wild knew\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An attempt at a funny line there (Mooney Goes Wild is the name of Derek\u2019s popular programme). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was rewarded with outburst of feral howls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Miche\u00e1l was more concerned by what he thinks \u201cis the real disparity\u201d between how some workers in RT\u00c9 are treated in comparison to others. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It speaks to a lack of structure around how people \u201care treated from a human resource point of view\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This echoed similar comments from him earlier in the day before the Cabinet met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They were echoed by Harris who said \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of hard work and decent people in RT\u00c9 who will feel let down by this latest set of revelations &#8230; it\u2019s beginning to look like there\u2019s a little bit of an upstairs-downstairs situation going on in RT\u00c9\u201d where certain people get more favourable treatment and that\u2019s \u201cnot fair in any organisation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RT\u00c9\u2019s continuity drama department started early on Tuesday morning when O\u2019Donovan said he had been expecting to go on Morning Ireland to talk about a swimming pool but was dropped at very short notice. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a serendipitous twist, Newtalk\u2019s Anton Savage kindly took him in so he could talk about an awful lot more than a new aquatic centre in the west. A lot of RT\u00c9 staff had been on to him privately to complain about how the organisation is run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was still talking about RT\u00c9 on his way into Cabinet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a rather baffling aside to his criticism of Mooney\u2019s \u201crecategorisation\u201d as a producer, he declared: \u201cIt\u2019s a very fancy word \u2013 I don\u2019t know if the public will understand it \u2013 I never heard of it until last week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Would you g\u2019way outta that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As Minister for Media, Arts and Culture he spends his time rubbing shoulders here and abroad with film and TV producers, often trying to get them to shoot productions over here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And as a TD for Co Limerick, he has talked about meat producers on many occasions in the D\u00e1il. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Later in the afternoon, there was more talking when he held a very lengthy meeting with the director general and the chair of the RT\u00c9 authority. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It must be a difficult week for the man who finds himself in the eye of the storm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Appropriately enough, there were statements in the afternoon on National Biodiversity Week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jennifer Whitmore, the Social Democrats spokeswoman on Agriculture, had some kind words for Mooney, singling out his recent documentary about urban nature for very positive mention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The D\u00e1il week kicked off with a heartwarming moment before hostilities commenced.
